the Burlingame Library Board
January 10, 1951
Trustees present: President Johnson, Mrs. Harrison,
Hr. Burns, Mr. Fichtner
Trustees absent: iar. Teal
The minutes of the December 6th meeting were read and approved.
BILLS The bills were checked by members of the Board. On motion by
Mr. Fichtner, seconded by Mrs. Harrison, and carried, the bills for
were ordered paid.
The librarian's report, as given on the statistical page of the monthly
financial statement, was ordered accepted upon motion by ar. Burns,
seconded by Mr. Fichtner, and carried.
The monthly financial statement was checked.
OLD
BUSINESS Civil Service Commission:
The librarian reported that the Civil service Commission had
extended the date for filing for the examination for senior
Librarian and Assistant Librarian until January 31, 1951 and
the examination date until February 19, 1951.
Lighting fixtures:
It was decided to request the City Electrician to install
500 watt outdoor flood lights in the reading rooms. If they
proved satisfactory they were to be retained until such time
as adequate li.-htinZ could be installed.
Change of Board meeting date:
The amended Article IV, section 1 of the by-laws which reads
as follows: "The regular meetings of the Board of Library
Trustees shall be held on the second Wednesday following the
first Monday of each month, at a pace and time to be determined
by the Board" was given its second reading and on motion by
"Ir. Bairns, seconded by Mrs. Harrison, it was carried.
Linoleinn repair:
The contractor was unable to move the charging desk as the
telephone connections interfered. This will be done at a later
date as soon as the telephone company can be consulted.

A second letter from the Red Cross, thanking the library for the
gift of various discarded books, was read.
A note from :Ir. Gillam, concerning the hanging of his paintings in
the library, was read. The librarian was asked to investigate further.

BliSINESS Disposal of discarded books:
The librarian was authorized, on the motion of Mrs. Harrison
and seconded by Mr. Fichtner, to allow Mrs. Blumer to dispose
of our discarded books to the various prisons and charitable
institutions in this area.

Salaries:
in order to insure a sufficient number of applicants for the
positions of Senior Librarian and Assistant Librarian, as
well as to bring the library salary scale into close
approximation with the other comparable libraries of this
area, it was decided to study certain sections of the
salary schedule with the view of approaching the Civil
Service Cor-mission and the City Council with a sound proposal.
Sufficient funds will have been saved from the present salary
budget to finance this proposed chance for the rest of this
budget period and that of the ensuing year. The librarian
was instructed to continue this study.
Holidays:
yThere was some discussion of the number of holidays allowed
the library staff. Farther study will be made of this problem
as to whether the library staff should be allowed the same
holidays as the City Hall staff.
