BURLINGAME PUBLIC LIBRARY BOARD
February 14, 1951
Trustees present: President Johnson, Mrs. Harrison, Mr. Burns, Mr. Fj
The minutes of the January 10th meeting were read and approved.
Bills: The bills were checked by members of the Board. On motion
by Mr. Fichtner, seconded by Mr. Burns, and carried, the
bills for 61,260.99 were ordered paid.
The librarian's report, as given on the statistical page of the
monthly report, was ordered accepted upon motion by Mrs. Harrison,
seconded by Mr. Fichtner, and carried.
The monthly financial budget expenditure sheet was checked.
Old Business:
City Council: Mr. Burns stated that at the next City Council
meeting the Council would appoint a new member of the Board t¢
take the place of Mr. Teal, resigned. He stated that Mayor
Love has said there were five applicants.
Civil Service Commission: Mrs. Johnson met with Mr. Lancastez
chairman of the Commission, and discussed the number of the
present candidates for the two vacancies on the library staff-
namely, Assistant Librarian and Senior Librarian. She stated
that there were four or five applicants for Assistant Librari€
who would appear, but there were none for the Senior position.
She also stated that there were a large number of applicants
from out of the state and if no one was selected for the
positions the Civil Service Commission would try to give some
sort of an examination by correspondence.
Lighting fixtures: Mr. Fichtner presented a letter from Mr.
Kruger, lighting specialist, which stated, in general, that tk
substitution of the 500 watt outside floods in place of the
regular 500 watt lights in the reading room fixtures had
increased the amount of light perceptibly. However, the numbe
of lumins is only about one-third the accepted standard for
such installation. It was decided to order sufficient lamps
for use as replacements if and when those recently installed
burn out. After considerable, discussion, it was decided to ti
the same lamps in the Easton Branch, and continue study of the
possibility of purchase of the necessary fluorescent tubes fox
the main library and the storage of same until sufficient func
are available for their installation.
Salaries: Mrs. Johnson was authorized to inquire as to the
intentions of the City Council in regard to the Library Board'
request for a joint meeting on the subject of salary adjustmer.

Communications:
A letter was read from the A.A.U.W. in regard to the record
collection, in which it was stated that they would like to
see a certain amount set aside for the upkeep of the Karen
Loynd Memorial Record Collection.
New business:
Non-resident fees: A motion was made by Mr. Burns, seconded
by Mr. Fichtner, and carried, that Mr. V'Thite should be asked
for information on the average tax paid by the home-owner of
Burlingame in support of the library. A letter was written
to the City Council in reply to their wi~ ;6te request, statink
that there are 358 non-resident card holders, and a total of
:716 was received from this source.
Grounds: Mr. Anderson's request for certain changes in
planting of the grounds was granted.
Adjournment:
Upon motion by Mr. Fichtner, with second by Mr. Burns, the
vote was unanimous to adjourn.
