I. Call to Ordbr
Trustee Towle called the meeting to order at 5:30pm.

III. Library Board of Trustees April 17, 2012 Minutes
The April 17, 2012 minutes were approved as written.

IV. Millennium Campaign Presentation (Anixter, Nicholson,Harding)
A motion was passed to move the Millennium Project discussion to the fourth
item on the agenda. M/S/C (Rosenthal/Griffith)
Pat Nicholson, Foundation Advisory Board member and professional campaign
project coordinator, presented a power point which set forth a format for
launching the capital campaign. Pat Nicholson is enthusiastic about this project
and emphasized that in order to ensure a successful campaign "planning is
everything." The first step is to form a core committee that would set the course
of the project. Members of this committee will discuss potential committee,
members and donors, and donor recognition. Michael Ma, Patty Anixter, Lisa
Rosenthal, Pat Nicholson and Sandy Towle have chosen to serve on the core
committee.
V. Correspondence and Information
Library Circulation Statistics - Easton Branch/Main
Circulation statistics at both the Main and Easton remain higher than last-
year during the same period.

VI. Reports
A. City Librarian's Report Highlights
1. Personnel AFSCME and its members within the City of Burlingame
have reached agreement on their contract which now permits City
departments to begin hiring for vacant positions. Jeannine Culligan has
been appointed to the position of Library Assistant II and will work in
.,Administration and Circulation.
2. Web Site - Cathy Somerton, Maryam Refahi, and Jeff Mikulik have .
created a new, dynamic and user friendly website. Please check it out and
give us your feedback.
3. Children's Author Program —Trenton Lee Stewart, who writes.the
Mysterious Benedict Society, spoke to an audience of 210 children and
parents on May 3rd about his works. Books Inc. partnered with the Library
for this event and sold out of Mr.. Lee's latest book "The Extraordinary
Education of Nicholas Benedict."
B. Library Foundation
1. Book & Author Luncheon - This year the annual Book and Author
Luncheon exceeded all expectations from choice of venue, pre-event for
Escoffier members, food selection, raffle items and authors extraordinaire.
Comments from all guests were extremely positive and many expressed to
Foundation members that they will return next year.
2. June Book Sale -Dates for the June book sale are June 14th through
June 17th.

VII. Unfinished Business
A. Budget Update
Final budget session will be held May 16th in the Lane Room. Pat Harding will
forward the agenda to the Trustees.
B. Meeting Dates -The July meeting will remain as scheduled. The Trustees
approved a motion to place the August meeting date.on the June agenda.

VIII. New Business
A. Acknowledgement Event
Trustee Corcoran proposed that the Trustees fund an appreciation event for
Maryam Refahi in acknowledgement of her award winning art work.

The meeting was adjourned at 6:30pm. The next meeting of the Library Board
of Trustees will be held June 19th at 5:30pm in the Library Conference Room.

City Librarian Report
June 19, 2012
Personnel- Geralyn O'Brien has been hired as the LAIII in Circulation. Geralyn's duties includes
interviewing, hiring, training, and supervising Library Pages and Aides in the Circulation
Department.
We have hired three new on-call librarians in Adult Reference—Dena Grover, Chris Gray, and
John Piche.
We have two new staff hired to work on-call in Children's- Michele Gilchrist and Kelly
Mackewicz.
In Circulation, Raquel Metcalfe will be returning to BPL to work some Sundays during the
summer to cover for Louella who will be out until late August.
We will be interviewing for the one full-time and one thirty-hour a week librarian positions on
Wednesday,June 20tH
On Tuesday, June 12th we had an all-staff training with Edmond Otis—"Dealing with Difficult
People: Making Libraries Safe and Sane". Edmond is a Senior Lecturer in Health and Sports
Science at the Eastern Institute of Technology in Hawke's Bay, New Zealand and Developer&
Director of Training at AACT NOW—Making the Workplace Safe and Sane. Edmond's expertise
is in training, coaching, motivating and counseling clients from a variety of backgrounds. He has
worked with libraries for about eight years. He presented this same workshop to BPL staff in
2008. His emphasized that the three factors that are key to making libraries safe and sane are:
Teamwork, Clarity, and Consistency. We are planning to have an all-staff meeting in the next
month or two to go over what we learned and update our Behavior Policy. I'm planning on
inviting him back next year for a workshop on dealing with stress in the workplace.
Recent Program—On Saturday,June 9th, we had 100 people enjoy Yan Can Cook @ BPL.
Martin Yan was delightful as he showed attendees how to bone a chicken, and make a delicious
stir-fry!

Capital Campaign Meeting—our Burlingame Library Campaign Task Force— Patty Anixter, Pat
Nicholson, Betsy Corcoran, Deborah Griffith, Lisa Rosenthal, Sandy Towle, Michael Ma, Meeks
Vaughn and Kris Canon will meet on Thursday,June 28th to start planning our library captial
campaign.
Discover& Go—BPL will join libraries from 19 Northern California public library systems to offer
a downladable museum pass. Passes are either free or discounted. There are over 40 cultural
venues in the Bay Area. We plan on going live with the program in July.
Each library on the Discover & Go Network shares the annual cost of the service, the
responsibility for adding new venues to the service, and launches with an Opening Day
Collection of museum pass offers that Contra Costa has negotiated on behalf of the Network.
One thing the Discover& Go libraries will not be sharing is passes. Each participating library will
have their own pool of museum passes for their own cardholders that are not affected by new
library members joining the Network.

Request for funds for Staff Appreciation and Volunteer Recognition for FY 2012/2013
I would like to request$4,000 to be transferred from the Trustee's Copier Fund to fund the Staff
Appreciation for the FY 2012/13. These monies are used for:
• Purchasing anniversary Book's Inc. gift cards-$10 each. $640 was spent in FY 2011/12.
• Appreciation Dinner-$1882.76
• Awards given at Dinner-$467
• Retirement Lunch-$100
1 would also like to request$250 for volunteer appreciation gifts. This includes cards and gift cards for
our volunteers.
Total request is$4,250.
