Johnson, Mr. Burns, Mr. Fichtner, IMr. Cargill, 1,ilrs. Damm. Council members present: Mayor Simonds, 1r11r. Atvia.ter. :I UTR''S Correction of the previous minutes. The minutes of the previous meeting of July 8, 1953, were read; and the Librarian noted that an admission had been made. He stated_ that P;rs. Johnson had said that in the future any changes made in the distribution of the various funds in the viorlzinf3 bud et from one classification to another would be followed by a notification of the changes to the City Council. The r::inutes were approved with this change. BILLS On motion by Pdir. Fichtner, seconded by irirs. DarU!i, the bills in the amount of ;988.33 were ordered paid. LIFRARI�l:i gra r'EPOi�T The LibrarianIs report was accepted and the financial state- ment was approved. OYD BUSIIIESS The revised budzet as passed by the City Council vias discussed. The Librarian stated that a promotional examination for Senior Librarian and a regular examination. for Junior Librarians had been set up by the Civil Service Coitu.ission. j," , BUS=L?' ';SS A list of the books purchased Burn : the previous nonth was submitted by the Librarian. The Librarian stated that Virs. Bertha. Kellum, a representative from the State Library, called and offered the Staters 7ood offices in any difficulties the Library might have in re-ard to censorship. She left several copies of President Eisenhower's letter to the American Library Association Convention for distribution to the Library Loard and the Cite Council. Mrs. Johnson su-;rested that a letter of conmratulation be sent to Dorothy Cooper on her recent concert appearance by the Library Board. It was moved by Mr. Cargill, seconded by Mrs. I;aima, that such a letter be sent. 2 Hir. Burns stated that he no longer wished to be Secretary -< of the Board and resigned. On a motion by Mr. Fichtner, seconded by Mr. Cargill, his resignation was accepted. On a motion by .ur. Fichtner, seconded by Mr. Burns, 14r. Cargill was appointed secretary. There was a short discussion by 1.1r. Fichtner about the non circulation of technical books. The Librarian stated that in 7eneral feet of these books were purchased each year--that only those recormended by the combined opinions of many library authorities are purchased. If the Library is to carry on as an institution capable of meeting the reference needs of its patrons and answering the many difficult questions sub- mitted to it, it must have at least a general covering of the !mown knowledge in the several fields. An invitation_ to meet with the City Council at a future date in September was extended by Mayor Simonds. •1rs. Johnson i accepted with thanks and also thanked the Council members for their presence.
