Minutes of the meeting of the BURLINGAME PUBLIC LIBRARY BOARD August 13, 1953 Trustees present: PresiJdent- Ctrs. Johnson, Mr. Burns, Mr. Fichtner, Mr. Cargill, Mrs. Darier. Council members present rTayor Simonds, 1-7r. Atwater. Tal,TUTLS Correction of the previous minutese The minutes of the previous meeting; of July 8, 1953, were read; and the Librarian noted that an admission had been made. He stated that T,rs. Jomnson had said that in the future any changes made in the distribution of the various funds in the wor1dng bud~et from one classification to another would be folloied by a notification of the changes to the City Council. The r_inutes were approved with this change. BILLS On notion by Mr. Fichtner, seconded by Mrs. Daa,un, the bills in the amount of X988.33 were ordered paid. LIBRARIE tg REPORT The Librarian's report was accepted and the financial state- merit was approved. OLD B11S1K'2,SS The revised budget as passed by the City Council was discussed. The Librarian stated that a promotional e=milnation for Senior Librarian and a regular examination for Junior Librarian had been set up by the Civil Service Co�rzr_ission. A list of the books purchased during the previous month was submitted by the Librarian, `The Librarian stated that Mrs. Bertha. Hellum, a representative from the State Library, called and offered the Statets good offices in any difficulties the Library irdght have in regard to cer_sors''hin. She left several conies of President isenhowerts letter to the American Library Association Convention for distribution to the Library Board and the City Council. T`rs. Johnson sun;ested that a letter of congratulation be sent to Dorothy Cooper on her recent concert appearance by the Library board. It was moved by Mr. Cargill, seconded by "r`rs. Doxin, that such a letter be sent. 2 1,1r. Burns stated that he no longer wished to be Secretary of the Board and resigned. On a motion by Mr. Fichtner, seconded by Mr. Cargill, his resignation was accepted. On a motion by Mr. Fichtner, seconded by Mr. Burns, Mr. Cargill was appointed secretary. There was a short discussion by 11r. Fichtner about the non circulation of technical books. The Librarian stated that in general fear of these books were purchased each year--that only those reconanended by the combined opinions of many library authorities are purchased. If the Library is to carr,* on as an institution capable of meeting the reference needs of its patrons and answerin; the many difficult questions sub- mitted to it, it must have at least a general coverin? of the 1 own 1-moirledge in the several fields. An invitation to meet with the City Council at a future date in September was extended by Mayor Simonds. Mrs. Johnson � accepted with thanks and also thanked the Council members for their presence.
