BILLS On a motion by Mrs. Damm, seconded by Mr. Fichtner, the bills in the amount of $2,670.43 were ordered paid. LIBRARIANtS REPORT The Librarian's report was accepted and the financial state- ment was approved. OLD BUSINESS Walk. A short walk was built in front of the library for $50. Moving main desk. The main desk has not as yet been moved through the enability to obtain bids for the replacement of the linoleum. Flag. A new flag was purchased from the Pioneer Flag Co. for $6.00. It seems to be very definitely a better grade flag than the other flags we have had, at less cost. COMMUNICATIONS A letter was received from the Public Library of South San Francisco inviting the Librarian and staff to attend an open house on Thursday evening, October 22. The Librarian was instructed to attend. NEW BUSINESS Attendance at Council meetings. It was decided that Mr. Lechich would attend one of the two regular Council meetings held during the month. Mr. Fichtner and Mr. Burns believe that members of the Board should attend the Council meetings whenever possible. Holidays. After some discussion, it was decided that the Library will be closed only at such times as the schools are closed, and that the subsequent time off for those who work on the days that the City Hail observes as a holiday will be taken at some future time when the schools are not in session. BURLINGA14E PUBLIC LIBRARY Librarian's Report on Activities in the Library October 21, 1953 - November 18, 1953 Walk. During the past month, the Library has received many favorable comments on the long-awaited construction of the side walk in front of the Library. Attendance at City Council Meetings. The Librarian attended one meeting of the City Council and expects to attend others as necessary. Library Convention. The Librarian and the Assistant Librarian attended the Library heading Conference at Stockton. This constituted the California Library Association Convention for this year. The Burl: ingame Library was one of the few libraries in California to have a display at the Convention. This consisted of materials from the summer reading club program; and we have. since received very favor- able comments from the Exhibition Chariman and others who admired our display. The Librarian and Assistant Librarian also took active part in the various panels held at the Convention. Book Cases. Two additional book cases have been received and installed by t Eedoor. These will now accommodate the new books without over crowding. Branch Furnace. The Librarian noted that the furnace at the Branch needT a replacement for the fire box unit which has developed a crack. This will be done in the next few days, with an expense of about $30. Ladder. The new ladder to facilitate the replacing of the fluorescent =bbes was received. Tele2hone Installation. The pay telephone has been installed in the entrance ol�ibrary. Addition of Technical Books. The Librarian stated that from the first of January until the en of October there has been an approximate expenditure of 0150 for technical books of a mechanical and indus- trial nature. Staff Illness. Due to the illness of the library assistant, Alda e diaJett, we avd considerable difficulty in organizing our desk schedule and in completing the work she ordinarily does. Circulation. It is to be noted with interest that the combined main and ch daily average circulation is 58 items higher than during the same month in 1952, or a total of 1798 items more. z California Library Association Convention. It will be left to the discretion of the Librarian as to who will attend the Convention, when and what expenses will be paid for attendance at the Convention. Bookcases. It was moved by Mr. Fichtner, seconded by Mrs. Damm, that bookcases to the amount of $6176 plus tax will be purchased. Framing of Declaration of Inde endance and Bill of Rights. It was decided that the Librarian would contact various clubs and agencies and see if this could not be incorporated into a program of one of the service organizations. Drain at Branch. The necessary removal of water to keep the area under the Branch Library dry can be accomplished by the construction of a drain at the back of the Library. Retirement of Ed Leis as Fire Chief. It was moved by Mr. Cargill, seconded by Mr. Fichtner, that the secretary of the Library Board write a letter of congratulation and commenda- tion on his many years of faithful service to the City of Burlingame and that the various members of the Board and the Librarian sign the letter, (same to be given to the Master of Ceremonies'prior to dinner). Dinner meeting with City Council. It was moved by Mr. Cargill, seconded by Mrs. Damm, that the secretary write a letter to the City Council expressing the thanks of the Library.Board for the recent enjoyable dinner meeting. Phone. It was moved by Mr. Fichtner, seconded by Mr. Cargill, that the Telephone Company be allowed to install a phone in the entrance of the Library.
