Librariants Report on Activities in the Library
December 17, 1953 - January 20, 1954
Movement of the circulation desk. The circulation desk has been
movea forwara. THIs will mean that it will be possible to add
a small registration desk behind the main desk. We have not as
yet instituted the checking of books as they are taken from the
library in order to see if they have been charged, but probably
will do so as soon as we can see our gray clear, in other words--
when we have an adequate staff.
Branch furnace. The timeclock that was added to the branch furnace
resulted n a saving of from four to eight dollars over the previous
months last year. There should be a similar saving at the main
library when the new clock is installed. ,`
Radioro ram. The librarian participated in a committee meeting
concerning the distribution of costs of the radio program to be
sponsored by the Bay Area Libraries and to be produced by KCBS
for thirteen weeks beginning in February- date indefinite- but
to be heard on Sunday mornings. The probable cost to our library
will be 415.00. It was the librarian' s problem to determine an
equable basis for distribution of these costs.
7 libraries 450.00 100,000 population or over
12 25.00 25,000 - 1000000
13 15.00 50000 - 250000
The enclosed mimeographed sheets will give some idea of the extent
of the program.
Peninsula Librarian Meeting. The librarian did not attend the
meeting Eela at the San Mateo Library because of illness. There
was several committees set up to promote cooperation between the
libraries of this area. Such things as a union catalogue of
reference materials held in the various libraries would be one of
these activities.
Recent severe storm, No damage at the main of the Branch. However,
there was some seepage of moisture under the Branch floor. It is
hoped that the drain which is to be installed at the back of the
building will stop such seepage from that area, but it will be
necessary to do something about the side.
Adult Deaartment displays. An interesting display of antique
Christmas tree ornaments called forth many comments from the patrons
during the Christmas season. Several Christmas trees added more to
the spirit of the season,
Circulation. The month of December is one of the slowest months of
the year because of the Christmas holidays. However, the circul-
ation was 14 per cent higher than last year. Sundays continue
to increase. The second Sunday in January had a circulation of
over 300 which, along with the reading room fall of students and
others, really gave the page, library aid and library assistant
a three hour work-out. Remember students ask many questions.
The inventory in the adult non-fiction at Main library is almost
complete. The biography section is yet to be finished. Many.
books that were missing are turning up.
Conventions. The American Library Association is to be in
i nneapolls,, Minnesota June 20-26, 1954. Miss gelbasky would like
to have permission to attend this meeting. She has never attended
a national convention. She then could take her vacation at her
home in Duluth, Minnesota after it is over.
Juvenile Department. In the Juvenile Department there is a notice-
ible Increase in circulation. It must be kept in mind that the
war crop of babies is at the reading age now, and provision for more
money in the book budget for Juvenile books next year should be
asked.
Story Hour. Story hours at both the Main and Branch Libraries have
Increased gradually during the year in attendance. At the Branch,
where it is easier for the children to walk by themselves, Miss
Andrews has drawn in quite a crowd of followers.
Miss Welbasky attended a meeting of the Association of Children's
Librarians of Northern California. This group meets every second
Thursday of the month at the San Francisco Public Library. New
children's books are reviewed and discussed, Talks by well-known
children's authors are the highlights of most meetings. Miss
Welbasky is on the Board of Directors of this group,
Inventory was completed in the Juvenile Department at the Vain
Library- in July, 1953. Most of the books that were missing were
in the missing group of the 1949 inventory. Inventory had not been
taken for many years before that, so it is not a fair pie ;ure of
, books lost. The books lost from 149 to '53 were comparatively few.
We are still checking to find those missing, and many have turned up.
So the report is not complete to hand in yet.
A request for the Board to think about: Miss Welbasky would like
a charging desk for the Main Library Children's room. There is not
adequate room on this one for checking in and out books during the
rush hours. The desk which is now in use there, could be put
behind the main desk. We tried to buy a used one from the South
San F ancisco Public Library several months ago, but they decided
to ke9p it for use in arBranch Library in the near future.
Three rows of sl:) s for the catalog in the Children's Room were
received in December. They are now in place and in use,
