HomeMy WebLinkAboutAgenda Packet - LB - 1954.12.15 Minutes of the meeting of the BJRLINGA 1_E PUBLIC LIBR4RY BOARD November 16, 1954 Trustees present: President Mrs. Johnson, Bir. Cargill, Mrs. Darren 'MINUTES The minutes of the previous meeting of October 20 were read and approved'. BILLS On a motion by Mr. Cargill, seconded by Mrs. Dawn, the bills in the amount of 2,970.66 were ordered paid. LIBRARIAN'S REPORT The librarian's report was accepted and the financial statement approved. OLD BUSINESS Branch:. The librarian stated that he had contacted rid, who has had some discussion with the developer of the Mills Estate, and finds that they will sell the City a lot at cost. He will persue the subject further as to location. Examination: An examination for library aide will be g vein n die near future and one for Junior Librarian in January or February. The librarian stated he had received numberous replies from the advertisement pub- lished in the Library Journal. Two or three of the applicants will be interviewed, although none of them have qualifications equivalent to those of Mrs. Curtis Gentry, who is to report December 1 as a temporary appointee. Telephone: The telephone booth will be installed on the fight side of the library in line with the Frederick Butcher residence, and if this location does not prove satisfactory, the booth will be changed to another location at a later date. Shelving: After discussing the pressing need for additional shelving, it was decided that the librarian should contact the Library Comnittee of the City Council and ask for permission to use part of the funds approved for a glass case to purchase the much needed shelving. Contractional relationship to other communities: The librarian reported that e had discus-F-07—FiMMayor Atwater the possibilities of a contractional agreement with the City of Hillsborough whereby all residents of that city would be allowed to have library cards--this service to be rendered for the approximate amount the City of Hillsborough paid for their County library service. Mr. Atwater stated that he thought further investigation of this subject would be desirable and that the librarian's idea of an organization or group within the City of Hillsborough to sponsor such a program would probably be the most effective means of attaining it. The librarian stated that there are certain interested individuals who would apparently be glad to undertake such an activity. Friends of theLibras : The librarian reported that he a a en ed a mee ng of the Friends of the Library the previous evening and was very much impressed by the large attendance and the excellent program. As the Library Board had indicated an interest in forming a similar group, he had made certain contacts with those who sponsor this group in order to become better informed on the steps necessary to start such a group here. The librarian believes there are several members of the San Francisco organization that reside in Hillsborough and we might be able to obtain their services in building up this organization. Reading room noise: The problem of noise in the reading room was 'scussed and the librarian stated that most of the students contacted thought that signs would in no way remedy the situation. It seems that recently the room has been more quiet. Publicity: The publicity received in the papers was rev ewe and the reference librarian commended for her efforts, but it was suggested that the length of the articles be reduced and the reviews shortened, if possible. COM0,17T TICATIONS None NTX BUSIPIESS The librarian was instructed to find out the cost of highway signs pointing to, or indicating, the direction of the library. ADJOURNMENT It was moved by Mrs. Damm, seconded by 11r. Cargill, that the meeting be adjourned.
