Cohendet, Mr. Cargill, ;;Ir. Edwards, Mr. Crosby. M=JTF.S The minutes of the previous meeting of March 13, 1957, were read and approved. i SILLS On a motion made by ;1Y . Cargill and seconded by Mr. Edwards, bills in the amount of 1,703.78 were ordered paid. LIBRARIAiti'S REPORT The Librarian's report was read and accepted and the financial statement was approved and placed on file. OLD BUSINESS New Branch Site. The Board agreed to met with the Elementary School Board on April 24, 1957,to-discuss a proposed neer branch site. Survey. A summary of the survey conducted at the high school in order to determine the number of card holders amongst those students who reside in Hillsborough, shoved that of the 154 students who filled out forms: 56 students have cards; 5 students have family cards; 3 students use the San Mateo Library; 90 students do not have cards. As the seniors did not fill out this form, there are probably 30 more students from Hillsborough for vk-ich we have no data. Stack Addition. A new estimate of the cost submitted by her. Yorenburg shows about a increase in the cost of construction of the building addition. The cost of construction would be therefore, y0,000, and equipping the same with stacks would cost x„27,000 additional. By-Law C_h_a_n es: A second reading of the by-law changes was ,approved on a motion by r-Crosby and seconded by Airs. Cohendet and carried. Lai er Contacts in Regard to Wills and Gifts. Mr. Cargill was requested to contact the va.r`i-atiis ers in tTie connun--ity 1n regard to the placing; of the libraryts name on their lists for tax free sifts and bequests, he is to be assisted by Mr. Lechich. N BUSIFIESS Bud et. The Operations Budget „as discussed in detail. The Librarian pointed out that a increases were nominal and that only four items in the Operations xudget were changed from that of the previous year. Printing, was increased x200. This, he stated, was made necessary by the `easea number of book cards purchases and the increase in the amount of overdue notices being sent, and the increased amount of printed cards and forms made necessary by the increase in number of new patrons. LI-14 Telephone, was increased $40, the first increase since 1953. This was made to a oworor the increase in rates. I4-17 Books and bia2s, were increased X1,417. The budget of last year was the same as the previous year and did not alloy sufficient funds for the replacement of many of the obsolete semi-technical books on such subjects as insurance, directories, etc. LIBRARY BOARD MIEUTES M leeting April 11, 1957 Page 2 There has also been an increase in the cost of books during this two year period. -20 Dues to Library Associations,_ were increased -a35, this in order to allow for an c paced increase in dues to the various associations. C-90, The only item is for painting the trim of the Klain Library and the trim and wa s of the Branch Library. This has not been done for several years. The total fi,,gure of :;;24,949.00 is exactly the same as that of last year. Salaries, Certain changes were made necessary by the Library Board's acceptance or-IF6--resin-nation of the Assistant Librarian, Firs. Foltz, who will remain in her former position as Senior Librarian in charge of children's books. It was also thouh.t necessary to allow for the possible promotion of one of, the Junior Librar- ians to Senior Librarian, th-_zs giving three Senior Librarians and two Junior Librarians. The Library Assistant classification was dropped and an additional library aide placed in this classification. Some change in the terminology may be desirable. Library Aides, part time, budgeted in the amount of ;;4,900.00 was increased to 5,750.00, in order to allow for an increase in their pay scale to 41.25 - 1.35 - 1.50. The pages were likewise increased from 4Z,600.00 to $4,SOO.00, in order to allow for the change to .90 - 1.00 - 1.10. This item vias also raised slightly in order to employ two additional pages. This was made necessary by increased business at the library and by the great difficulty in keeping the stacks in order, due to their crowded conditions. The total salary budget is 11$52,205; the operations is :24,949.00: a combined total of X77,154.00. This is 42,754.00 more than last year's budget, and should not reo_uire an addition_ in the tax rate, unless certain other changes are made in the present distribution of fines and fees, which are now applied to the reduction of the overall budget. This budget is regarded as tentative, in that no provisions have been made for a sinking fU nd for expansion of the stakes or the acquisition of property for a branch. It was moved by 1•ir. Cargill and seconded by Mrs. Cohendet that the Library Board accept the tentative budget, and carried. ADJOURi HENT On a motion by ?r. Cargill and seconded by ir. Edwards, the meeting was adjourned.
