LIBRARY OBJECTIV Z Tho Primary goal of the library is to supply the book needs of the cornntnity. Circulation fi,,;uros refloat the degree of success in terms of useo Burlingame Public Library'$ circulation for the year 1956-57 was 11.G per capital an increase of 4 percent over 1955.56, and a 33.1 percent increase over 1951. P►econtly tho circulation figure has been climbing rapidly. Fobruary 1950 was 15.7 percent mare than February 1957= I:Iarch was 17.4 percent more than the sario nanth in 1057# and 44 poreer_t larger than ►larch 1350. It seems safe to assurua that if the current trend eontirntes the library will have the highest circulation per capita of any library in the State. Thus we soon to be advancing our first objsctiva of supplging the boort needs of the eorca ni.ty. In thoendeavor to fill these needs, the recent emphasis on sciences (triWored by Sputniclt 1), has mado it more 3rrporative than ever to wood our science and engineering collections. Ilany of our books are dated and, although wo have 1ntrchased new bgolts in this field, we have not, been able to replace our dated material with new editions simp17 because of the great expense involved. Such books sell from. to -.15 or more, and the with-, draval and r©placemnt of half of our books on physics would moan the expen- diture of sovoral hundred dollars. That they aro needed is amply derzonstratei even boobs that are 25 years old still circulate in spite of their limited usefulnesso This dermiid is constantly increasing, not only because of the recent eLik%asis on such subjects, but also on account of the constantly growing size of the high school population. Last year only the exceptional child or young ma.a was interested iti science and engineering fields; today the demand is up 100 percent or rare. As erohasized in last year's budget requests, library use by non- resiaent,- non-card holding students is ever increasing. It in thought that Lzany of the books that are missing in this year's inventory can be directly attributed to this large group who do not have cards, but who do use the library. It is becoming more important that some contractual arrangement bo trade with Hillsborough, and perhaps the Iiig4 School District, for the issuance .of cards to Dose students who must use the library if they are to successfully fla.lfill. their academic requirementso file still mast serve approximately 10000 additional Ilillsborough students in the not too distant fature o The position of Assists t Librarian has not as yet been filledo As stated elsouhara,. txie vaaanoy still exists because of the unprecedented increas© in circulation made necessary the employment of more part time library aids: leaving insufficient funds for the hiring of an assistant librarians Also it is not simple to *find a suitable candidate for the position, since people vith,'the. necessary training and experience are in short supply The Librarian. has worked longer hours, and continued to divide some of the duties of the assistant librarian between the senior librarians. 'The library has apparontly succooded in finding a branch site on the Benjatni.n Pranllin Dlera©n.tary School property in the stills Lstate. Definite arran erients have not as yet been made, but the Merlentary School Board has indicated that a site Mould b_e nada available on Truesdale at the north- west corner of the proportye Funds for the purchase or lease should be provided in this budoto Although the suostod uothod of providing funds, for the proposed staclt extension was a_iproved byy the City Council, action was overruled by an advorse opinion of the City Attornoye r1bo situation would soon to be best resolved by an increase in the. library tint suffieiont to provide a sinldng fund for the construction of the building. Those monies can be expended at the behest of the Library Board as soon as the legiolature amends the Library Lair in such a fashion as to clearly indicate its Intent. Such a correction no doubt ri11 be i_3mde by September 1953. So tawny libraries havo erected buildings under this law that there is no doubt as to the intention irrplioit in the enacted bills, but only a need to flake clear tho letter of the law: 'sho friends of the Library organization has continued its slogs growth+ Somo excellent people Izavo become .member$, and it is hoped that as this group groyra it will eventually provide strong support for the library'. There is, woroover, a loyal corps of library patrons, some 2,000 of them Otho Would stpport the library actively if called upon to do sow .do institution as ruch used as this (by over three fourths of the people in the eomrlmity) is without friends, whether they band together in formal organisation or nota le Adequate staff • 2 o , Sufficient book fund 3.
