OLD BUSINESS
S fe Kier some discussion of the subject, Mrs. Cohendet stated that due to the
librariants inability to get a safe for 50 and no replies to the short article in
the newspaper, it was decided to purchase a safe of the correct specifications at
a possible cost of $90. At this time, Mr. Crosby stated that they had a safe they
might possibly jive to the library but at the moment didntt know whether they could
or not. Any action will be delayed until the next Board meeting.
NEW BUSINESS
.,_ e as opy. In the Librarian's report there was mentioned the words "last copy"
which, on being questioned, the Librarian stated the term meant that one copy of a
given title would be retained either in a library system or in a library cooperating
with the State Library. The program was set up by the State Library several years
ago whereby certain designated libraries contributed cards to a Union Catalogue for
use in inter-loan activity throughout the state. Thus, if a certain book was listed
as being in the Los Angeles Public Library but not in the State Library, the would-
be borrowing library was no notified. Several libraries might be listed as having
the desired book. The libraries who were listed agreed to notify the state when they
wished to withdraw a book. If it were determined that this was the last copy avail-
able for interlibrary loan, then the State Library would inform the library wishing
to discard this copy that it should be retained. The Librarian stated that this
procedure had been in effect for many years with libraries cooperating with the State
Library but that recently, due to apathy created by lack of personnel, the program
had been rescinded. At the State Convention several people discussed the formation of
a committee to reactivate the project with a wider base of participating libraries.
The Librarian stated that it would be one of the most desirable forms of cooperation
that California libraries could join in and, after discussing the matter with the
State Librarian, she stated that in all probability the program would be reactivated.
ADJOURNM 'moi T
On a motion by Trustee Crosby, secorded by Trustee Moody, the meeting adjourned.
Respectfully submitted,
G. P.- Lechich
Clerk of the Board
