I - R cubmittedG.. Lechich Clerk of the Board j i i i i I i 1 J i j i I i I I LTBRAIRLIltS REPORT January 17,1961 CIRCULATION The month of necember has the lowest circulation for any month of the year. This r ' Cr. -:s ^lin 3 .. -Jas ~:o dcuiD: c'ue to the long holiday and the library being closed Christmas anc the follcwing Monday.. The week following was exceedingly busy in Reference - the rooms were ,dammed with students. A recapitulation of the circulation figures for the year 1960 showed that Burlingame Is the most literate city in the Bay Area. Its citizens read 28.6`' more per person than Its nearest competitor, Palo Alto. The 23,944 residents of Burlingame read 13.5 books per capita last year. Palo Alto was next with 10.5; Richmond was third with 8.6; Redwood City was fourth with 8.3; Oakland fifth with 6.6; aBd, San Mateo sixth with 6.5. The circulation for the Burlingame Public Library in 1950 was 195,764. In 1960 it was 323,474. This is an increase of 65.2 `. During this period the population increased from 19,886 to 23,944, or 22.2"'. The circulation increase was 431 more than the population Increase. This is uniqua in that, relative to population jswth, many cities have gained very little and many have lost. In Palo Alto, whose population more than doubled,, circulation decreased 5.61, per capita. In San Mateo, where the population Increased 68f from 1950 to 1960, circulation decreased 91 per capita. This pattern is quite uniform for those cities wh#ch had =cell-establishedi libraries in 1950. This gain in book use is paralleled by an increase in reference use. :°here are many tins when no seats are available in the reading rootas. We have added, or will add, some additional seating this year. The Childrents Section is growing rapidly. We need additional seating there. This can be accomplished by additional space. We hope to achieve this by building an extension which will increase not only t`:is area but allow additional work room space. There are at times 9 to 10 people or more in an area built for 3 or 4. The Librariants office is more of a receiving room than an office. If the people of Burlingame continue to read at an ever,,-increasing rate, almost fantastically higher than any other library in t1-As area, then the Library must expand. We ha-ve the adult stack space. We hope for the udork room and the Children's area addition. MEETINGS ATTENDED The Librarian attended the City Commissioners' dinner. Mrs. Bergsing, Mrs. Levering and the Librarian attended the Institute at the University of California on mechanization. Some sof the processes might be used in our library but perhaps the delineation of cost breakdowns used by the Contra Costa library was most informative. Mr. Wickliffe attended a meting of the music librarians at Stanford. This was a planning meeting at which was discussed future meetings which will be on the handling of sheet music and record collec- tions. Miss Palovic and Mrs. Bergsing attended the monthly review of the Association of Children's Librarians. CRILDRENtS DEPARTMENT Miss Palovic had a special showing of her color 8mm movies on Austria and Bavaria, introducing the children to these two countries. She talked about the special costume she wore for the occasion. An exhibit on Germany was set up. Seven classes from the Intermdiate School visited the library and a talk"Wiven on reference books, the card catalog, and the Dewey Decimal System, The story hour continues with 35 to 40 children in attendance at each session.
