CIRCULATION
ThS circulation decreased 6.^ percent over the month of May, 1961. However,
the total circulation for the year is slightly ahead of 1960®61. The per
co?!'k a of 13.9 books per person for 396061 may be .about as high a circulation
as we can attain, as 3t is :,uch `:nigher thcs, any of our neighboring libraries.
The elementary schools, including tSe parochial schools, are developing strong
libraries of their own and, in order to attract- the children, we will of necessity
have to increase our 2rograr- of clean room visits, etc.
It sees apparent that we st devise sorm mans of attracting the new
residents to the library. In the past they —ere reached through the "WA1 otm
TYagan% but there should be some activity on our part, such as furnishing a
revised brochure an the library along with application cards for library member.
shipv T' e new industrial groups could be contacted and furnished with a notice
concerning availability of our services for posting on their bulletin boards. It
has been suggested that special groups such as the "Burlingame Carden Club" would
be interested in lists of new acquisitions for inclusion: in their newsletters to
club members.
In order to help rmld the heoavy losses of books to students, it would be
wise to pro to the holding of cards by each high school student who uses the
li'>rary. <e have found that the students who do not have cards are generally the
ones who abscond with our books. During a recent locker seerch at Burlingame High
School, Txe found that of those mho aliritted responsibility for having the books;
6 h,;."' no cards !3 Hillsborough students), I had s card (free, property owner in
Burlingame, but non-resident) and 2 had regular cards.
CHILDRO a S ROOgT, MAY JUNEA 1962
All ele-wentery school class rooms. from 1st through 5th grades, have been visited
-ith inVitations zc use the library and to join the sutwer reading club. Three classes
from Coolidge and l'oover Schools visited Easton Branch for book talks and library
Instruction.
Interest in the Scuba Diving Summer Reacting Club is running high, with many
children ntrendy signed up and reading. The Lions Club is again sponsoring the Reading
Club and the Ladles Auxillary of .the Lions have cu-t dist the 3,000 sea animals which
will be used to mark each child2s reading progress throughout the tern weeks of the
Scuba Diving Reading Club. All displays emphasize scuba diving and underseas explor-
ations. Table and case displays feature shells and coral and drift-wood--even a treasure
chest—•,-:bile the bulletin boards spott dolphins and fish net. The Seven Seas of San Mateo
has loaned a life-sized dummy in scuba equipment, and Phantom Productions of Palo
Alta has loaned a child-sized du gr to the Branch. Mrs. Gertrude Smoody made a
beautiful sbad^w box of miniature divers swiming through an ocean studded with coral
and shells. All the staff have generously contributed shells and jewelry, etc. for
the displays.
Respectfully submitted,
