Resp ctfu'lbmitte Georg Paui Lechich _ __ Clerk of the Board- LIBRAIRIMOS kt&-,0XT July 16, 1962 CIRCULATION Irculation increased 6.&' over that of .June, 1961. This is probably due in part to the increased activity of the reading club "program. Since: many of the adults who bring their children to the library take out books, the 808 ' increase in the chiidrenQs circulation probably also effected the adult circulation. ACQUISITIONS The library added 7,.527 volumes of which 1,480 were gifts. It discarded 2,371 volumes of outdated or worn-out books. Of these added volumes 4,982.were indite - aidual titles. A table comparing the local libraries in regard to individual titles added is as follows for 1960®61: Burlingame 4,863 Redvmod City 2,721 South S.F. 4,853(3) Berkeley 3,764 Alameda 3.,169 Daly City 39714 Richmond ,781 Vallejo Not listed San Bruno 1i,112 Palo Alto ,465 Santa Posa 2,717 San Rafael 3,869 San Mateo Not listed Santa Clara.- 5,793 (1) Menlo Park No record San Leandro Vot listed Mountain Vier 6,626 (2) (i) Santa Clara, '& very rapidly growing city of over 60,000, has ,a library of 51,260 volumes. . They purchased 11,982 volumes and added 5,793 titles. They have over 27,000 'patrons. (2) Mountain View added a total of 12,503 volumes in an effort to establish a basic collection. (3) This" figure wast be in error as it would hardly be -.possible for only:-100 dupli. cates to be purchased out of a total of 4,953 -volumes,, It is interesting to note that we added far mare titles per capita than any of the libraries- in this class. CHILDREN'S S ROOM Ne Sc-M—Diving Sumner Reading-Club was off with a bang on June 18th. That first week 154 boysand girls retorted on the first 2 books that they had read this stammer and received their chart and diver cut .out, thus becoming members of the club. They will report on two books a week for tote 10 weeks of summer, adding s different sea animal to their chart etch week. With a choice of five colors for each cut-out, blue has been overwhelmingly popular. By now we have 465 members -2f.50 at Main and 215 at the Branch--more than double the 200 odd members of*-last yearns. Viking Club. And everyday a few new members- .are joining and making up their reading and .reports. There has been a resulting increase in circulation and registration. Several parents from Hillsboroub and Sati Mateo have paid for non-realdent cards, sa that their children could become Scuba Reading Club .menbers. The scuba Reading Club is popular with allages®-3 kindergartners, are reading and reporting on primers .and pre-primers, and a few 7th graders are members. (Usti•• ally even 6th graders consider themselves too grown up for a reading club.) The children are also cor.tributin- t3 the displays, bringing in shell o and a Matel Scuba diver. Tie: firat pre-school story, hour was on Wednesday, July. 11, and will be held every Wednesday at 10 throughout the summer. Newspaper releases were sent to the San Mateo Times and- the Advance. The Advance did. not print the announcement- until the morning of story hour, and the Times did not print it at all. Nevertheless, 19 small children assembled for this first story hour. The regular story hour for school ,age children has been dropped duringthe summer at both main and the Branch. Attendance was falling, and there is the reading club for this age group. The Main Childrents Room has completed tha .inventory of picture books. Simul", taneously ,with iAventory,. _this collection was tieeded, the books tnPi led, and replace. - mitts ordered. The picture book collection is now in very good condition.
