BURLINGAME PUBLIC LIBRARY BOARD
February 11, 1963
Trustees Present: Trustee Moody, Trustee Cohendet, Trustee Lynes, Trustee DeMartini.
Trustees Absent: Trustee Harrison.
MINUTES
Minutes of the previous meeting of January 21, 1963, were read and approved.
BILLS
On a motion by Trustee DeMartini, seconded by Trustee Lynes, the bills in the amount of $2,399.93
were ordered paid.
LIBRARIAN'S REPORT
The Librarian's report was read and accepted.
MONTHLY FINANCIAL STATEMENT
The financial statement was approved and placed on file.
OLD BUSINESS
Salaries. The Librarian reported that the City Council adopted a one-step increase for all Civil
Service employees connected with the library. They also allowed an approximate 10 percent increase
for part-time employees. The amounts are to be set by the Librarian.
Branch Site. Trustee DeMartini explained that the Mills Estate Homeowners Improvement Club had questioned
him in regard to the library's intensions concerning a branch in the Mills Estate area. He said that
he explained that at present there was no decision as to when and where a branch would be provided.
Further discussions on the subject will be held with various interested parties.
COMMUNICATIONS
A letter of thanks was received from Mrs. Gertrude Smoody.
A letter of commendation concerning Mrs. Dorothy Terpay was received from the Principal of Washington
School. The Library Board also wished to express its cormendation of Mrs. Dorothy Terpay and instructed
the Librarian to convey their thoughts.
A letter was sent from the South-Western Publishing Company expressing appreciation of a letter sent
concerning use of the library.
A letter of commendation concerning Mrs. Dorothy Terpay was received from Mrs. Chrisie Koras.
A letter of thanks was received from the Burlingame Motor Company.
NEW BUSINESS
Reserve Cards. After some discussion, it was decided to increase the cost of reserve cards from 8 cents
and 2 for 15 cents to 10 cents each and 3 for 25 cents. It was decided to increase the cost of duplicate
cards from 10 cents to 25 cents. It was decided to increase the service charge for fine slips from 5 cents
to 10 cents. A motion was `made by Trustee DeMartini that the above changes be instituted. This was
seconded by Trustee Lynes and carried.
On a motion by Trustee Cohendet, seconded by Trustee DeMartini, the Librarian was authorized to attend a
workshop on Personnel Utilization to be held in Sacramento, California, February 18th through the 21st.
Friends. Trustee Cohendet announced that Mr. Herman K. Spector would address the Friends of the Library
on Feb nary 17, 1963, at 7:30 P. M. , Trustee Moody stated that he would be on hand to introduce the
speakers.
Presentation by Vice Admiral Lockwod. An autographed copy of Admiral Lockwo°d's latest book, "Hell at 50
Fathoms," was presented by Trustee DeMartini to the Library Board for placement on the Autograph Shelf of
the library. The secretary of the board was instructed to write a letter of thanks.
Appdgntment of Library Aide. The Librarian requested the appointment of Miss Norma Twisselman who had
worked as Page I and as Page II since December, 1958 to the library staff. He stated that she was quite
familiar with library procedures and was capable of handling the business of the library. She will not be
21 until March 20, 1965 and thus, she will not be eligible for civil service. The Library Board stated
that they had approved other similar appointments of people who were under 21 years of age. He stated that
he had discussed this with the City Manager and had his oral approval. It was moved by Trustee DeMartini
that the above be made and it was seconded by Trustee Lynes.
ADJOVOMENT
The meeting was adjourned on a motion by Trustee Lynes and seconded by Trustee Cohendet
