OF THE
BURLINGAME PUBLIC LIBRARY BOARD
January b, 19b4
TRUSTEES PRESENT: Cohendet, DeMartini, Moody, Lynes
TRUSTEES ABSENT: Harrison
The Board met in Special Session to consider the Parking Commission recommendations to the
City Council in regard to the deletion of certain lots on the north side of Burlingame
Avenue; to wit, Lot 4A known as the Library Lot, Lot 3A known as the Steinbeck Lot, Lot 5A
known as the Donnelly Lot, all of Block 3 (Burlingame Land Company).
Considerable discussion pointed out that present Library parking needs are substantial, and
that these needs will increase considerably with the proposed construction of an apartments
hotel diagonally across the street, and the construction of an aprtment on Lot 5 at some
future date. Our present on-street perking will be greatly reduced by use by tenants and
visitors to these apartments.
At a previous meeting, the building of an addition on Lot 4A had been discussed, and the
opinion was that any building constructed there should provide for parking underneath the
building. This conclusion was reached only after the original parking area as set forth by
the Parking Commissan was reduced by several lots in this area. It was felt that, in order
to adequately provide for parking in the vicinity of the Library, it would be most advisable
to have a pass—through-from Lot 4A through Lot 3A to Lots 5A and bA and thence to Donnelly
Avenue.
It was pointed out that Bob Smart, the engineer at Wil-Isey, Hamm and Blair, considered Lots
4A, 3A and 5A as core area lots, not gringe area lots; and that they were very important to
the parking plan. He stated that, without the acquisition of Lot 3A, parking would be quite
limited on Lot 4A, and that the parking pattern on Lots 7A and bA had been planned for efficient
use only by acquiring Lot 5A.
On a motion.by Trustee DeMartini, seconded by Trustee Lynes, it was moved that a request be
made of the City Council that Lots 3A and 5A be retained in the parking district, or that
they be made available for acquisition by the City for the Library.
The meeting adjourned on a motion by Trustee Lynes, seconded by DeMartini. Messrs. Moody
and Lynes were delegated to attend the City Council meeting immediately following.
Respectfully submitted,
George Paul Lechich
Clerk of the Board
