$3,904.10 were ordered paid.
LIBRARIAN'S REPORT
The Librarian's report was read and approved.
MONTHLY FINANCIAL STATEMENT
The monthly financial statement was read and placed on file.
OLD BUSINESS
Copying Machine. Trustee Lynes inquired of the Librarian as to the status of the copying
machine. The Librarian stated that at the end of 21 days the machine was averaging $11.00
per day. He states that if this use continues there will be no problem as to payment for
the machine.
Possible Library System - Composed of Municipalities but not the County. The Librarian
reported that he attended the meeting between the heads of the local municipal libraries
and the county librarian and the representative of the county manager. Most of the
objections pointed out in the letter to the county libraries were answered and some
resolved. The county representative stated that they would honor its contracts with local
libraries and that there should be further investigation in regard to the law on recipro-
cal agreements. He said there was some discussion as to a system without state aid. The
result of the meeting was to be forwarded to the city managers for their consideration
at their next group meeting.
Balance - A Proposed Computerized Library Cooperative. The Librarian reported that the
cost studies had not yet been completed and that the next meeting would be held in San
Jose on March 22nd.
Tapestry. The Librarian stated that he had not received the appraisal on the tapestry
from Mr. Derelian. He also said that he would try within the next month to go to Santa
Barbara and check the microfilm inventory of the Billings estate.
NEW BUSINESS
Budget. The tentative budget was submitted and discussed. There was a general discussion
of professional librarians' salaries, and Mr. Hechinger pointed out the greatshortage of
librarians that exists. There was a general discussion of the salaries of librarians and
school teachers. Mr. Hechinger then asked the Librarian when he had received his last
raise. Mr. Lechich replied that there had been small raises each year but that the last
one of significance was at the time of the salary survey in 1963, at which time the usual
differential between the librarian's and the fire chief's and police chief's was changed.
The Librarian said that in 1959 the differential was $45 but now it was $150 per month.
After considerable discussion, it was moved by Trustee Moody that the tentative budget
be accepted as submitted, with the recommendation that the librarian's salary be brought
into the same relative relationship as the police chief's and the fire chief's, as
existed in 1959. Motion seconded by Trustee Hechinger and carried.
ADJOURNMENT
On a motion by Trustee Hechinger, seconded by Trustee Moody, the meeting adjourned.
