MINUTES The minutes of the meeting of May 18, 1966 were read and approved. BILLS On a motion by Trustee Hechinger, seconded by Trustee Moody, bills in the amount of $7,731.67 were ordered paid. LIBRARIAN'S REPORT The Librarian's report was read and approved. MONTHLY FINANCIAL STATEMENT The monthly financial statement was read and placed on file. OLD BUSINESS Tapestry. The Librarian reported that he had obtained an appraisal of the minimum value of the tapestry. It was the consensus of opinion that the tapestry should be insured. The Librarian stated that he would inquire from the City Manager the extent of coverage, especially as to theft. He stated that the appraiser thought the value would increase substantially during the next two years due to the fact that wealthy people in Europe were buying up old tapestries for the castles and large homes they are investing in and the supply is limited. Salary Survey. The Librarian reported on the salary survey. He stated that he did not agree with the conclusion that the Librarian should be rated on the same basis as the average library in the im- mediate vicinity. He stated that the libraries in the North County and Menlo Park were in no way comparable to this library. He presented the letter which he had submitted as a protest to the surveyors. He also presented a tabular statistical form showing some comparisons of libraries with comparable budgets, number of professional employees, per capita circulation, number of titles processed, number of hours the library is open and various other itmes. After some discussion, on a motion by Mr. Moody, seconded by Mr. Hechinger, it was moved that the letter reflected the opinion of the Board, and the letter and statistics should be included in the minutes. Motion carried. NE1d BUSINESS Convention. The Librarian stated that he would be able to attend the American Library Association Convention and would finance most of the costs. He stated that two years ago the amount left in his convention fund was allowed as a partial offset for his expenses. After a brief discussion, it was moved by Mr. Hechinger, seconded by Mr. Moody, that such would be the case. Motion carried. Library Aide Appointment. The Librarian explained that one of our pages, who had been employed in the library for four years, had recently graduated from the College of San Mateo and that as she was 19 she did not qualify for Civil Service standards. He stated that she worked in the processing department and was very efficient and knew the work thoroughly. She majored in Business. He requested, as in two previous cases, that she be appointed as Library Aide until such time as she would qualify for Civil Service. It was moved by Mr. Hechinger, seconded by Mr. Moody, that Donna Albright be appointed Library Aide starting, July 1, 1966. Motion carried. Roof. The Librarian reported that there had been a leak in the ropf over the whole stacks and that something should be done at once. After discussing the qualifications of our present roofing main- tenance service, it was agreed that the librarian should replace the present roof as soon as possible before any extensive damage results to some 75,000 books stored below it.
