BILLS: On a motion by Trustee Hechinger, seconded by Trustee Lynes, bills in the amount of $4,804.45 were ordered paid. LIBRARIAN'S REPORT The Librarian's report was read and accepted. OLD BUSINESS: 11 the Amendment. As the 16th Amendment failed to pass by a large margin, it is presumed to be a dead issue. Copy Machine. The Librarian stated that the copy machine would soon be paid for and that he thought an additional one should be purchased for the Branch, as they would undoubtedly pay for it themselves. The Board agreed that this was very feasible. Tapestry. After considerable discussion and review of the report by Mrs. Thomas on the opinion of the tapestry by Mrs. Stanton of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, it was decided that the tapestry would be sold if an adequate offer was made. The Librarian stated that Mrs. Duncan thought that she had a possible customer for the tapestry; and if not, that they would be glad to display it in their show room. The Board agreed that this would be a good plan, as the Duncan's, who have been responsible for many gifts to the library, would certainly try to obtain the best price possible. It was moved by Mrs. Cohendet, seconded by Mr. Hechinger, that a motion made earlier concerning this tapestry be stricken out. This was unanimously agreed. NEW BUSINESS: Library Systems of Local Municipalities. The Librarian explained that several librarians of the City libraries of the County, who have independent libraries, had met concerning the possi- bility of forming a system based on the report which they had previously submitted to the city managers for consideration. He stated that their first meeting consisted of revising parts of the plan; and that the second meeting was held with the City Manager of Menlo Park, Mr. Mike Bedwell, who will take up the revised plan with the city managers. The Librarian stated that the city libraries have been cooperating several different ways for many years, and even without State aid we probably could put together some sort of a cooperative group which would be of service to each participant, especially so as local communities have complete control over it. He stated that he would inform the Board of any further developments. Expansion of he Building. The Librarian pointed out the inadequacies of the work areas and the fact that they were much more congested than any other City Department, and that it certainly was costing a considerable sum of money to operate in this fashion because of the inefficiency in handling materials and the handicap of close proximity of all workers. He said that he would determine what the increase would be in the overall cost to build both the extension to the Children's Department and the extension to the main building. He stated there probably should be some updating of the plans as these have been in existence for three years. He stated that as the library is the most used facility of the city, and this is continuously increasing, it certainly should be of prime importance to the city to expand the facility, especially since our survey of the past indicated that most adults who use the library shop in the area each time they come to the library. The Board requested that the Librarian prepare whatever materials are necessary for the next Board meeting. These in turn may be submitted to the City Council. ADJOURNMENT: On a motion by Mr. Moody seconded by Mr. Hechinger the meeting adjourned. PEETINGS ATTEME3s The Librarian attended the regular wttlng of the Ch of Commarce and the City Council meetings. SERVICE TO BUSINESS AREA: The Librarian has spent considerable time in an effort to find out ways and mans that the library may be of greater service to the business a ni'`'1 2nd its employees. At the present, the city doas very tittle other than present a site for an office complex or facility for the business community. It seems that whatever assistance: the city can render than way improve business; and am of the most important activities the city can do is to promote their welfare and general p►asparfty and contribute to the happiness of their mployees. In the past, toa have mintairAd the minimum amount of business materials, pri rily due to lads of funds, staff and space. San Mateo Public Library sintains a business section; ho ver, it sems, we cannot depend upon their faillity. With the' rapid growth of our Industrial Park area, it behooves cis to find out In what areas wo can aid and abet this growth. In the past, this coomnity has been mainly residential; and as such, we have one of the best libraries for that tyle of city in California. It is tip . to dateeraim whathar or not we will offer a grawiiog sagmnt of our tat base somethfng for their money e not only for altruistic reasons btt because their success reflects in the broadeenim of the tax base and ail a7 their substantial support which is at present comAng from the commnity tfth a crushing burden an the; residential property holder. Irving Anshan, a local business man and patron of our library with consider abio ablic relations ks"icw, has offered to help thea library drag sap a program for 5etter relations with the business commnity, He has out€i ned a amans of Paye 2 ,. procedure which I feet, if put into action, will result in putting the city In a favorable light, and my result in considerable addition to the library business book collection with minor expense to the library. However, if this public relations program is to be successful, to will need additional stack space and additional room. Our need is drastic, as it is. With more patrons, more books, and an active business community relationship, the library would be of paramount importance in the treating of ever-increasing traffic to the downtown area - an area in which the city and the property owners have invested a large amount of aooney - an area which the industrial district hardly knows exists. The library mots the ids of its residents. Should it not met than needs of the business groups? It is, without a doubt, am of the best means of increasing the coaimenity consciousness and sense of belonging that the larger corporations need to develop in their local employees and that the sM11 organisation must achieve in order to be successful. CHILDREN'S RMHs The Children's librarians hope all the members of the Board will stop in to see their exhibit for the holidays. The bulletin boards celebrate Christmas in different lands, with one for Chanukah, and the case shows the Nisse of Norway pre parr i ng for Christmas. Thanks to the Lions' generosity, a Christmas tree was decorated at the Wednesday, [December 14th, story hour, with 45 children gathered to sing carols while decorating, and then enjoying the traditional Christos story hour. 40 pro-schoolers enjoyed their party Wednesday morning. Candy cones were given to all the children attending, At Easton Branch, Dors,, Dunn LW her quote of SO children jawed into this Lion3l Dan to enjoy their tree-trioing and story hour.
