Mrs. Cohendet as Secretary was acting chairman due to the absence of Trustee Hechinger who was excused on account of vacation in Europe. Trustees Absent: Hechinger. Excused. MINUTES: The minutes of the meeting of August 15, 1967 were read and approved. BILLS: Bills in the amount of $6,195.20 were ordered paid on a motion by Trustee De Martini seconded by Trustee Lynes and carried. LIBRARIAN'S REPORT The Librarian's report was read and approved. Trustee Guthrie stated that he was quite interested in the program concerning the reorganization of the California Library Associa- tion and felt that many of the people were quite competent. MONTHLY FINANCIAL STATEMENT The monthly financial statement was read and approved. The Librarian explained that the amount spent for books was higher than average because of expense of over $1,000 for replacements for children's books. OLD BUSINESS: Building Program: The Librarian stated that he was working on a general library program, and that' the Assistant Librarian of San Francisco Public Library had made a special visit to look over our building and discuss some of the problems of expanding the facility. He stated that he thought, in general, the plan as set forth in the capital budget request was very good. He felt that no great modification of Mr. Norberg's plans would be neces- sary; that the areas and uses of the areas might be changed, but in general, for sketch plans, they were adequate. He stated that he would be glad to help any time that we would like him to. He also stated that he felt that some time in the not too distant future, San Francisco would definitely be ready to act as a central library for a cooperative system, either loosely held or otherwise. The Librarian stated that this was excellent news, as this was the first time that the Librarian was aware of a change in attitude. NEW BUSINESS California Library Association Convention: It was decided that those who wished to go could if arrangements could be made to cover their schedules at the library; that, as the Librarian is going on Monday and will return Wednesday night and will go back again early Friday morning, anyone who wishes to ride can go with him. Otherwise, their travel expenses will not be taken care of. Room, board, luncheons, registrations, etc., will be. The Librarian stated that it might be possible for some to fly down singly and return with him, or fly back singly. Special Library Fund Account: It was moved by Lynes and seconded by De Martini that the checking account at present in the Bank of America on Burlingame Avenue should be maintained and that new cards with the present trustees' names inserted after the resolution establishing the account be made. Space Rental for Surplus Books: After some discussion, it was decided that with a surplus book sale in Octo er or ovem er, the iresent congestion would be somewhat lessened; and any discussion for rental of space should be left until after the joint meeting with the City Council which would take place November 21. It was suggested that Rockwell 's next to the Blue Chip Stam,) Store or the store known as the Ladies' Exchange might have sufficient space for a book sale. The Librarian suggested that he might contact Mr. Whipple or some other owners of the scant stores on the Avenue which might be used for our book sale. ADJOURNMENT: On a motion by Trustee De Martini seconded by Trustee Lynes, the meeting was adjourned. Respectfully submitted, / W George Paul Lechich Clerk of the Board REPORT O -7—CTOVE" i i, o 7 BOOK STOCK For many year3, the policy of the library has been to retain or even purchase titles that were considered by son ne to bn dated but by others -worthy of retention. Miss Smith, the former librarian, was a "list" librarian. She beilevtd in checking such authorities as Standard Catalog for Public Libraries; Catalogue of the Lamont Library, Harvard College; Logasa, Historical Fiction; etc. If a book appeared, she did not discard it, and often from gifts or renaineer sales she would add titles. Thus our library became a list library and, remains so today. Som , ? ten years ago when the libraries of the area were being checked by the University of California Library School for their holding of the best 1,000 books, Burlingame ranked with the Oakland Public Library. This certainly spoke wall of Miss Smith's system; and it certainly has resulted in a collec- tion not only svited to young people but to the student and to the older, ,aambers of our community. Vlith the SNvigle report assuring us that the average complexion of the population is not going to change, that rrost of our population is over forty, ;.t would seers vise for the library to continue its past policies of book zelection and retention. Therefore, see try to wee-.1 where necessary but`t-rncrease our stack ca'illaity to the point where weeding does not marc thy: throwing aut of books of value, as has been done by our neighboring libraries. In doing so, we are p-oviding the majority of our citizens with a source of br.-Iolks not readily obtainable elsews iesee. With the resources at hand, we should make better use of them and develop an effective program for our older citizens; and especially should vie become conscious of the. probable effects on planning for exp,".nsion of the building. CHILDREN'S ROOM The last month has seen the beginning of story hour for the fall season. Mrs. Dunn has had 40 children for the after-school story hour, and the Pre- School Story Hour at the Branch Is oversubscribed with 50 children registered. For son-- reason unknown to us' the Pre-School Story Hour at the Main Library has gotten off to a slow start, but 25 children are now registered. One wishes that the San Mateo Ti would print the articles we send them to inform he pu'1ic of such services. Some par v,.4s and children are still unhappy because hone of the papers ran the story about the children completing the suanner readies;: program. Mrs. Powell and Nes. White took over in maid-September, to be acting Children's Librarians while Mirs. Egan is on maternity leave, September 15 - January 1 . Pav*11 Nim,!diately undertook activities to try to strengthen our rapport with the Burlingarnea Elementary Schools and to encourage more school visits and greater use of the library by children and teachers. Mr. White gave his permission for Mrs. Povmll to go ahead. She has had con%. rences with Mrs. Barklow and Mr. Chappelle. As a result, a cawittee of teachers .s to work vjith the Children's Library Staff to draw up a long range program of service to the schnois to b-, presented as a recomnv-ndation for adoption o the School Administration and the Library Board. The first meeting of this convO ttea will be held shortly. In addiction, Air,. Powell visited each of the elementary school faculties -:sed tallked with the teachers about library services. At that time a letter otaachers wms distributed. Attention of the Board is invited to the unusually attractive displays currently in the Children's Room. The Boards picture scenes from favorite books, and the case has an exhibit of water birds loaned by the .Junior Museum and arranged by Ars. VIhite.
