MINUTES OF THE MEETING
OF THE
BURLINGAME PUBLIC LIBRARY BOARD
JANUARY 16, 1968
t
Trustees Present: Hechinger, Guthrie, Cohendet, De Martini
Trustees Absent: Lynes. Excused on account of illness.
MINUTES:
The minutes of the meeting of December 14, 1967 were read. _ Trustee Hechinger stated that
there was an error in the "Trustees Present" as Mrs. Cohendet was present. Minutes are
to be corrected.
BILLS:
Bills in the amount of $3,336.31 were ordered paid on a motion by Trustee Oe Martini
seconded by Trustee Cohandet. Carried.
OLD BUSINESS:
Building Program: The Librarian stated that he had contacted four well-known library
consultants, Coit Coolidge, Margaret Troke, John Henderson, and Bernard Van Horne. He
stated that Mr. Coolidge called at the library and submitted a proposal in writing. Mr.
Van Horne also called, and after considerable discussion decided that he did not wish to
submit a proposal. He stated, however, that he felt that the building was inadequate and
that a new one should be provided. Mr. Henderson called at the library and discussed the
project with the Librarian, and later submitted a letter which, in brief, followed a similar
tine as Mr. Van Horne's. Mrs. Troke, although unable to come to the library, reviewed
the materials the Librarian had sent her, and stated that though she was very interested, she
felt that she did not have the time to become involved; and that she felt the Librarian
could do an adequate survey. The Board, after considerable discussion in which it was
brought 9t Mr. Coolidge did not submit with his proposal a statement of his qualifi-
cations, decided that the Librarian should definitely try to find other library consultants
and he was so instructed. Part of the proposal as submitted
by Mr. Coolidge concerning business books was briefly discussed by Mr. Hechinger, and it
was agreed that something along this line should be done.
Gift Book Sale: The Librarian stated that gift book sale would of necessity be again
postponed, but he hoped that before too long we would have a place available to conduct
the sale.
ADJOURNMENT:
The meeting adjourned on a motion by Trustee De Martini seconded by Trustee Cohendet.

LIBRARIAN'S REPORT
FEBRUARY 20, 1968
CIRCULATION AND TRAFFICt
In the Librarian's Report for April, 1967, it was noted that circulation and
traffic seemed to go .band in hand - thus indicating that our system of counting
traffic, though not accurate, is at least a good estimate.
Wi%h the pronounced increase in circulation (8% more than the same month last
yaor) , the traffic showed 2.2% increase. The circulation for December was
24,:650 for January 34,004. The traffic for December was 26,222, for January
34,491. It is interesting to note that 20% of the increase was in fiction
and 16% was in nonfiction - and this at the Main Library.
SPACE:
The librarian is looking for storage: space outside of the library. He is also
trying to locate an empty store for use in the book sale which must be € eld
i,mmarliately, for there is no longer any space; for discarded books.
Consolidation of stored but not discarded books is being studied with the hope
what, sm-, space may result. The library office is being partially moved to the
Board Room in order to allow more space for the cataloging staff. It is hoped
thai: two or three people will be able to work in this space.
CHILDREN'S ROOM:
Fehruary has been busy for the Children's Department at both the Main Library and
the Branch. tiol Towing up on the agreement with the schools, Mrs. Dunn has already
visited the 2nd, 3rd, fifth and sixth grades at Franklin School and has made appoint-
raents to visit the same grades at Lincoln. Mrs. Egan returned to war k February l
and plunged right in making appointments to visit McKinley and Washington schools.
So Far, the response has been very enthusiastic and the results most gratifying.
Valentine story h=ours x-*-re held at ;both libraries with the childrin cuing early -.rid
making Valentines to display in the room. The Lion's Club provided the necessary
materials and everyone seawad to have a good tire.
Plans are going ahead to have Mrs. Zilpha Snyder, a local children's author and trais
year's runner-up for tt. rA6-bery Awards visit Washington and McKinley Schools or
ri(ay morning, tt rch 22. From 3 - 5 in the afternoon, we are planning an open houze
at the Branch library so children at the north end of Surlingwie will have ars oppor-
tunity to -meet her. They will be serve6 punch and cookies, and we are hoping for
a good crowd.
