MINUTES OF THE MEETING
OF THE
BURLINGAME PUBLIC LIBRARY BOARD
MAY 19, 1970
CALL TO ORDER:
A regular meeting of the Burlingame Public Library Board was held on the above given
date. The meeting was called to order at 7:40 by Chairman Cohendet.
ROLL CALL:
Trustees Present: Trustee Cohendet, Trustee Hechinger, Trustee Lynes, Trustee De Martini,
Trustee Phelan
Trustees Absent: None
BILLS:
Bills in the amount of $5,457.60 were ordered paid on a motion by Trustee Lynes seconded
by Trustee Hechinger. Other bills, to be paid from the Library Special Account, were
approved for payment. There was some discussion of these bills, and it was brought out
that we paid for the newly acquired art prints and audiovisual equipment from this fund
rather than from the city's funding, since there is no provision for these materials in
the budget. Trustee Cohendet read to the board the names of the art prints that we have
bought, and photographs of the prints were passed around for the Board's inspection.
There was considerable interest, and several of the trustees personally examined the
prints themselves after the meeting.
MINUTES:
The minutes of the meeting of April 21, 1970 were approved and adopted.
LIBRARIAN'S REPORT:
r
The Librarian's report was read and ordered filed. The C.L.A. meeting in San Francisco was
discussed, and Trustee Hechinger stated that in his opinion there were two matters out of
keeping with the purpose of the meeting. One was the distribution of various petitions
which libraries could take and have signed., and the other was the distribution of anti-
war literature at the meeting. It was his feeling that library associations should not
be involved politically.
There was some discussion about the useage of public meeting rooms, such as the one we will
have. The matter of printing the library bulletin was brought up, and the Librarian said
we could have it printed. The book mark and the program for the Children's Summer Reading
Club were passed out and there was favorable comment. Chairman Cohendet suggested George
Ward be complimented on his excellent designs. She asked the Librarian how many children
usually sign up for this summer activity, and he said as a rule there were from 400 to
500.
San Mateo Libraries Cooperative Project: The Librarian reported that there had been
several committee meetings on interlibrary procedures and methods of coordination. There
have been two meetings of the heads of the libraries also in connection with this. He
said that we probably would be able to start the program by July 1st, since the State's
money will be available by then, and added that the Joint Exercise of Power Agreement would
be ready to be signed in another 2 - 4 weeks. Trustee Hechinger inquired if book processing
would be part of the joint endeavor, and the Librarian stated he thought not.
Building: The Librarian informed the Board that the City Council on May 18 approved the
building plans and agreed to the amount of $650,900 for the addition to the building.
This amount will include the air conditioning and the change in the lighting. He said
that minor changes would not have to be brought up with the Council if they do not affect
the price in any way. Trustee DeMartini asked when the starting and completion dates would
be, and the librarian replied that they hope to get started by the first of August and
completed in March. Trustee DeMartini then inquired if the basic functioning of the
library would be impaired and was informed that it would not. There followed some
discussion of contractors and contracting.
General : On the subject of cataloging, Trustee Hechinger asked if we could get information
on the microfilming process, and the Librarian informed him that we had written for it.
Trustee Cohendet asked about the formation of the Friends of the Library group, and the
Librarian stated that he is trying to reactivate it - that it had been the purpose of
several of our staff going to the Friends workshop in San Francisco recently.
NEW BUSINESS:
There was no new business.
ADJOURNMENT:
Upon a motion by Trustee Demartini seconded by Trustee Lynes and carried, the meeting
adjourned at 8:30 P. M.
Respectfully submitted, f
George Paul Lechich
Clerk of the Board
LIBRARIAN 'S REPORT
JUNE 16, 1970
MAINTENANCE:
Several important items have finally been accomplished : renewal of the sign for
the Easton Branch Library, the painting of the front and the sash on the Western
side of the building, as well as a water spot in the interior ceiling.
The roofs at both Main and Easton have been put in first-class shape. A new
roof was installed over the women 's rest room, the old roof of which leaked
constantly despite attempted repairs. Seventeen cracked tile were also replaced.
MEETINGS:
The librarian attended the meeting on the system organization, which will be
presently in operation. Most of the problems seem solvable, especially with a
little give on everyone 's part .
After some consultation with the San Mateo Librarian, she decided to ask for
an increase in non-residence fees in order to bring them into line with the
inflationary per capita cost spiral . Her board voted to charge $24.00, which is
more in line with the actual cost.
Changes in fines and fees to make uniform changes through the system will be
_ requested at this meeting.
CHILDREN 'S ROOM:
The month of May was almost totally involved with preparing for the Summer
Reading Program. All the schools, grades 1 through 6, were visited to tell
the children about the club. The displays by Susan Freeman, a page, set the
mood for our "Mysterious Summer." The club began on Monday, June 15, with
enthusiastic response from the children.
On Saturday and Sunday, May 22 and 23, the Burlingame Art Festival was held.
At the Festival, the Children' s Room gave a puppet show entitled "The
Gunnewolf." The primary purpose of the show was to advertise the shows that
are to be held during the summer in the Children 's Room.
P.S. You're all invited to see the display in the Children's Room.
