The meeting was called to order at 7:30 by Chairman Cohendet. ROLL CALL: Trustees Present: Trustee Cohendet, Trustee Lynes, Trustee De Martini, Trustee Phelan Trustees Absent: Trustee Hechinger, excused MINUTES: The minutes of the meeting of June 16, 1970 were approved as corrected in the second sentence under "Friends of the Library" 'she spoke on the workshop which Mrs. Bergsing attended in San Francisco. ' BILLS: Bills in the amount of $8,904.56 were ordered paid on a motion by Trustee De Martini seconded by Trustee Phelan and carried. LIBRARIAN'S REPORT: The Librarian's report was read and ordered filed. OLD BUSINESS: Chairman Cohendet stated that, as Col. Norberg was present, the building would be the next subject on the agenda. Col. Norberg explained the plans as they had been modified and submitted them to the Library Board for their approval. Several questions were asked by those present concerning the extent of the carpeting, exits, and type of drinking fountain to be provided by the Women's Club of Burlingame. On a motion by Trustee De Martini seconded by Trustee Lynes, the Board expressed its approval of the plans and recommended them to the City Council for final action. Motion carried. San Mateo Libraries Cooperative Project: The Librarian stated that the Joint Exercise of Power Agreement had been approved by the City Council and that it was at present Circulating around the various cities, and that the system would probably be in operation by the first of September. Steinbeck Property: The Librarian stated that as far as he knew no action had taken place on the Steinbeck property, but it had been on one study session agenda and would probably be on another. It was his understanding that the present price is not too much greater than the lot and the small section between it and the Donnelly Avenue parking lot, which, he believes, came to a total of about $60,000. The Board urged the Librarian to contact whoever might follow through and make a determination of whether or not the Council wished to go further with this. There being no further business, the meeting adjourned on a motion by Trustee De Martini seconded by Trustee Phelan, at 8:30 P. M. Respectfully submitted, Georg Paul Lechich Clerk of the Board LIBRARIAN'S REPORT AUGUST 18, 1970 CIRCULATION AND TRAFFIC : The small increase in circulation over July of last year (1/2%) is again accompanied by an increase in the traffic count. The increase in circulation is again,as it was last month, in the adult classifications; and probably continues to reflect a trend similar to that of the depression of the thirties. SAN MATEO LIBRARIES COOPERATIVE PROJECT: Two meetings of the governing board of the system resulted in setting the date for its activation, namely, October 1, 1970. Most of the problems involving circulation to and return of books by patrons of other system members have been solved, and financing has been assured to cover costs. The main problem has been in the determination of the type of intercommunication device to use. It seems at the moment that the microwave type as used by the police depart- ments will be the best choice, as this will leave us with an excellent system when the establishment grant funds have been exhausted. The cost will then be only about a tenth of the Telephone Company TWX system, and could easily be carried by the system. STEINBECK PROPERTY: The City Council has requested an appraisal of the Steinbeck property, and this should be in soon. At that time the Council will determine their course of action. CHILDREN' S ROAM: July was a month almost totally spent listening to book reports and guiding th children in their search for the clues of the Mysterious Summer. George Ward, Mary Wilson, and Al Escoffier from Easton Branch presented a series of puppet shows for the children. In order that the time and effort spent making and puppets and preparing the shows would be used to the fullest, arrangements were made with the San Mateo Public Library to perform for their children. In return, the concluding puppet show of our series was given by Miss Schiffer and Mrs. Gorman of the San Mateo Public Library. The response to the shows was such that a fall series will be held.
