LIBRARIAN'S REPORT
OCTOBER 19, 1970
CIRCULATION:
There was a modest overall circulation increase of 12!. The 7.6% increase in
the adult circulation at the Main offset the loss at the Branch and in the
Children's Department at t,ia ilai n.
TRAFFIC:
The traffic at the main library was down considerably due to misreading of
the traffic counters last month.
MEETINGS ATTENDED:
The Librarian attended the meeting of the Peninsula Library System. Mrs.
Bergsing also attended a workshop on training the non-professional in technical
services, and part of the staff attended a session on t'ie availability of
reference materials, with emphasis on b*;b1i )g,-a:)'-r;es, at San Francisco Publico
This type of session is important in order to familiarize the staff with the
source of reference help through B.A.R.C. with which we are now affiliated.
SYSTEM:
The inauguration of the system on October 1, 1970 took place smoothly. There
has been as yet no great increase in business, and we probably will not notice
any difference until gradually patrons learn about new services, etc., available.
We are keeping records of all transactions, and a summary of system activity
will be in next month's report.
BUILDI,'4:
Excavation for both basements has been completed, drain fields placed, and
work is going forward as planned.
CHILDREN'S ROOM:
September is a month devoted almost exclusively to school - public library relations.
Attached you will find a letter which was sent to each school . Appointments
have bee, a:-ranged with each principal and school librarian to discuss the
letter and hopefully answer any questions that .night arise. Each teacher
receives a copy.
Our school visits both to the school and to the library have begun, and a
number of teacher collections have been pr--pared.
On October l the Annual Open House For teachers and authors was held ani
Roosevelt School was a4arded the Summer Reading Club Book Award. Mr. Greene,
the principal, accepted the award.
Pre-school Story Hour and School Age Story Hour have begun.

TO THE TEACHEIRS OF BURLINGAME:
Another school year has begun; and as in the past, the Burlingame Public
Library invites you to participate in the library programs offered to you
and your students.
On October 1, 1970 the Burlingame Public Library together with all of the
libraries in San Mateo County, with the exception of South San Francisco and
Menlo Park Libraries, initiated the Peninsula Library System. The result
is that the member libraries of the System are able to make their collections
and services available to citizens of each member community.
Any resident of Burlingame, Daly City, Redwood City, San Bruno, San Mateo
City and San Mateo County holding a valid card from the library of the
community in which he or she resides will be eligible to borrow books and
other materials from any library in the System.
Books and other printed materials may be returned to any location in the
System, but special materials, such as recordings, films, pictures, State
library books must be borrowed from and returned to the library issuing the
materials. This means that teachers need no longer apply for a teacher 's
card but can use the card from the library of the community in which he or
she resides. If a teacher does not wish to use his or her individual card,
the Burlingame Public Library provides a school card. This card has been
issued to each school and is held at the library. It has been agreed that
the school will be responsible for the materials borrowed.
Those of you who were teaching here last ;ear are aware of our program of
extended loans for classroom use. This service will continue this year.
Collections can be prepared in advance if you notify the Children's Department
what materials will be needed. if the Children's librarian is not available,
would you please laa ve the necessary information - that is, grade level,
subject, number of books needed in additio;i to your name, school, and
telephone number - w-t!- the s'' a f in the Children's Room. If you tail prior
to picking up these coilections you can b assured that they are boxed and
ready for you. The collections will be loaned for a four week period. If
you are unable to return the collection on the specified date will you please
notify the Children's Room so that our records can be kept up-to-date.
In accordance with the recommendations of the curriculum committee, we are
planning to visit 2nd, 3rd, 5th and 6th grades at least once during the
school year. Plans for busing the 4th grades in the Fall and lst grades in
the Spring to the library have been made by the School District. The
To Teachers - 2 - October,1970
Children's Department strongly urges that each class be brought to the library.
Visiting the library enables the librarians to explain the library services
available to the children and introduce the children to our extensive
collection. When you call to arrange a time, we can discuss the kind of
visit you would like, such as story-telling, book talks, or instruction in
the use of the library.
We are especially happy at this time to announce that our year of construction
has come. Funds have been allocated and excavation has begun. Unfortunately
this means a certain amount of noise and collection shifts. Please bear
with us, for the end result will be a larger children's and reference area.
The staff of the Children's Room is looking forward to visits with you and
your classes. Please contact either of the following if you have any
question about the System, teacher 's collections or class visits.
