LIBRARIAN'S REPORT
November 21, 1972
BUILDING:
Minor changes in the roof drainage have been made: Larger screens to increase
the total area for debris to collect in order to avoid ponding on roofs. The
Sequoia Gigantia at this time of the year sheds its leaves and small scales,
which between them will plug up tight almost any screen. Therefore, the larger
the screen the better.
None of the items approved by the City Council have been completed although some
should be by the next Board Meeting.
CIRCULATION AND TRAFFIC :
The circulation increased 5.3% over October 1971 . The foot traffic increased 6.7%.
REFERENCE DEPARTMENT:
All members of the Reference Staff attended the BARC Workshop on Census material
on the 18th and l9th. Mr. Wickliffe attended the monthly PLS Reference Librarians '
meeting, and also the annual tea given by the Burlingame Writers Liub in honor of
members who have had works published during the year.
Outstanding reference materials added during the month included the first six volumes
of the new Soviet Encyclopedia purchased with PLS funds (with the added lagrN,appe of
the same volumes on microfilm as a special gift), and the microfilm runs of the New
York Hearald-Tribune Book Review and the London Times Literary Supplement, both also
purchased with grant money.
AUDIO VISUAL DEPARTMENT:
The Fall Film Festival was deemed a successful series and has received many requests
for another in the Spring. The attendance for the four Tuesday evenings (October 3,
10, 17, 24 7:30-9:00 pm) averaged 23 persons. Most selections for the programs
were from the Library's own 8mm film collection. Two films from San Mateo Public
Library ( 16mm) were shown: "Colorado" and "Ishi in Two Worlds". Amateur films were
not included in the program.
The new 8mm films are now circulating for 1 week from the Reference Desk. There is
a limit of 3 films per library card.
Twelve framed circulating art prints have arrived from University Art Palo Alto,
for the Art Print Collection. The prints will be on display in the Reference Room
Until December 1st, after which they will circulate. The new collection includes
several graphics by Van Gogh, as well as still lifes and landscapes by such artists
as Andrew Wyeth, Claude Monet, Bernard Buffet and others. The new prints bring the
total collection to 55.

COOPERATIVE INFORMATION NETWORK
The Board of Directors of the Peninsula Library System asked Mrs. Bergsing to be
chairman of a committee to investigate the possibility of beginning a Cooperative
Information Network in San Mateo County, coordinated with the network already ex-
isting in Santa Clara County. The goal of this project would be to develop a
communication network among all types of libraries for the purpose of expanding and
improving information services to all citizens within the two counties. To explore
the interest and discover the needs of the various types of libraries in San Mateo
County, an initial meeting was held at the Burlingame City Hall Council Chamges
on November 9, 1972. Over 40 librarians attended representing 33 libraries. A
resolution was adopted to go ahead with the project and to apply for a federal
grant under the Library Service and Construction Act Title III. A comittee was
elected to represent the five types of libraries in the County (public, academic,
school, special and institutional ). It has already begun working on a grant pro-
posal to be submitted to all the libraries for approval early in January 1973.
