CONVENTION: The Librarian, Assistant Librarian, and Audio-Visual Librarian attended the CLA convention, as well as Trustee Genevieve Phelan and Trustee Edith Cohendet. Hopefully some of our mechanical problems with the charging machines were 4 settled as the Librarian had a long discussion with the engineer from Bro-Dart. The meetings of primary interest to Mrs. Bergsing at CLA were those dealing with networks and systems. On Thursday, she attended the Congress of Library Systems, as well as the opening general session of the convention, which included an address on networks by the Associate U.S. Commissioner of Education. Friday, there were morning and afternoon programs on networks, how they operate, how they are financed and what legislation is needed to organize and fund them properly. As always, the exhibits were interesting and informative. Mr. Escoffier attended the joint luncheon of the Friends of California Libraries and California Institute of Librarians. The Bay Area Social Responsibilities Round Table (of the American Library Association) held a panel discussion on what the SRRT does. Topics covered were correctional institutions, Bay Area Business Librarians, service to children, etc. Saturday began with a meeting on mobile units for libraries, including a tour of the 8-10 mobile units on display. Author Michael Crichton spoke at the CASL Luncheon and gave real insight into the _. processes an author goes through to create. The rest of the afternoon was devoted to the Intellectual Freedom Committee' s speaker, Lillian Gerhardt, Editor-in-Chief of School Library Journal . This was the highlight of the conference for Mr. Escoffier. The discussion centered on library access for children and young adults, as well as the development of the novel for these age groups.
