Respectfulli Submit ed, Georg Paul Lechich Clerk of the Board LIBRARIAN'S REPORT February 20, 1973 BUDGET. We have received the budget preparation blanks and we will have the tentative budget ready for the next board meeting. BUILDING: There were several leaks during the heavy storms in January. The major ones were through the concrete walls on the south side of the 1959-60 stack extension. We used Thompson Water Seal on the inside cracks add Clark 's Permaseal on the outside cracks. This seemed to correct the difficulty for the present. Col . Norberg furnished the Permaseal . We added louvers to the bottoms of the doors of the storage closet in the auditorium in order that the cold air would be picked up from the floor by the cooler-heater. The upper louvers were closed off from the back. None of the items previously mentioned at the meetings have been finished despite our efforts to get them done. CIRCULATION: The circulation increased nine percent (9%) over that of January of last year. The Main Library circulation was higher than any previous January. Over 29,948 people used the facilities, an average of 1, 151 per day. Patrons asked 1,299 reference questions and those who did not come to the library phoned in 544 questions. REFERENCE DEPARTMENT: Al Escoffier attended a Bay Area Young Adult Reviewers meeting at Millbrae Public Library late in January. The discussion topic was paperbacks with appeal to young adult readers. A book review column is currently in the planning stages. It will be a weekly feature in the Burlingame Villager. It is hoped that much of the staff will participate. CHILDREN'S DEPARTMENT: Three schools, Franklin, Washington, and McKinley held their faculty meetings at the library during the month of January. The meeting began with a tour of the library and informing the teachers of the services available to them as individuals, as teachers and those services that would be of particular interest to their students. A discussion followed which covered questions about the library and suggestions from the faculty of how the library could better serve the school community. A program which consisted of reading games made by the fifth graders of Darnell Williams at Washington School, was held at the library of Saturday, January 20th. -2- The games were made up from books the children had read--20 questions dealing with facts about the story and 20 questions calling for the player to define vocabulary words found in the book. Another reading game day will be held at Easton on March 3rd. The playing of the games has resulted in the desire of the children to read more because they have to read the books in order to play the games. It is hoped that we can have more programs, displays, and activities displaying the creative ideas of the school children. a CITY OF BURLINGAME BUDGET EXPENDITURE . FEBRUARY 20, 1973 THIS TO BUDGET MONTH DATE ALLOW, BALANCE S-1 Salaries M-11 Supplies 240.31 1, 124001 2,520 1,395099 M-12 Postage & Printing 491 ,04 3,081 .78 3,320 238.22 M-13 Light, Heat, Water, Power 733.44 5,656.48 9,240 3,583.52 M-14 Telephone 123.21 588077 2, 100 1,511 .23 M-16 Maintenance 353076 1,562033 3,600 211037.67 M-17 Books & Maps 3,612.86 28,979.43 42, 500 13,520.57 M-17A Periodicals 523.92 3,353.01 4,200 846.99 M-17B Binding 310.17 1, 125.05 3,000 1,874.95 M-17C Cataloging 234.36 1,636.77 2,000 363.23 M-19 Convention - 190.86 275 84.14 M-19A Auto Allowance 73090 125.60 300 174.40 M-19P Personnel - 212.54 250 37,46 M-19T- Trustees - 161 .06 125 (36.06) M-20 Dues to Library Associations - 261 .00 275 14,00 M-21 Miscellaneous - - 100 100.00 M-24 Typewriter Repairs 26.65 98.01 350 251 ,99 M-27 Compo Insurance - - 2,000 2,000.00 M-28 Contracts 675000 5,400.00 8,400 3,000.00 C-90 Capital Expenditures 25.60 539.05 450 (89005) TOTAL BEFORE SALARIES 7,424,22 54,095.75 85,005 30,909.25 TOTAL AFTER SALARIES STATISTICS FOR JANUARY, 1973 CIRCULATION: MAIN BRANCH Books - Adult Non-Fiction 11,952 1,209 Child Non-Fiction 1,499 845 Adult Fiction 9,395 2, 111 Child Fiction 2,243 921 Total Books. . ...."..00. .. 025,089 :. . .........5,086 Periodicals 1,227 504 Sub-Total . .. . ....... .....26016 .. ..... .. . ..5,590 Phonograph Records 736 - Slides 0 - Art Prints 46 - Cassettes 0 - Films 99 - TOTAL CIRCULATION. ... . . ...27, 197 oo•00000•0005,590 GRAND TOTAL BR. & MAIN: 32,787 (1972 Circ: 30, 123 - 9% increase) Daily Average Circ Main: 1 ,007; Daily Average Br. : 224; TOTAL CIRC AVERAGE: 1 231 .
