The Librarian was asked how he was going to pursue the parking problem. The Librarian
stated that he was collating his figures and would present them to the City Council when
he felt the survey was complete.
CORRESPONDENCE:
A letter with an attached check in the amount of $15.00 was received from the Burlingame
Art Society. A letter of acknowledgment will be sent to the Burlingame Art Society for
their generous donation.
A letter of commendation from Mrs. W. G. Livingston, 205 South Ashton Avenue, Millbrae,
California, was read. Mrs. Livingston praised the Reference Department for their
perseverence and dedication in helping her locate a book with very little information.
OLD BUSINESS:
Easton Drive Branch: Discussion was held as to the progress of the plans for the refur-
bishing of Easton Drive Branch. The Board questioned Mr. Lechich as to the limits of the
study requested by Mayor Martin; should it be solely for the Easton Drive Branch, for
Easton Drive Branch plus possibility of another facility or for the other facility alone.
NEW BUSINESS:
Mrs. Judith Zingher was introduced to the Board members and was asked several questions
about herself. Mrs. Zingher stated that she lived in Berkeley and that her husband
attended the University of California.
Trustee Cohendet moved that Mrs. Judith Zingher be appointed to the Civil Service status
of Librarian I, effective October 1, 1973. The motion was seconded by Trustee DeMartini
and unanimously carried.

A bid for janitorial services from A-Day and Night Building Maintenance was introduced
to the Board. Discussion was held regarding our present maintenance contractor
(L. Rancelli & Co.) and the possibility of contracting another maintenance service.
The Librarian will check into the A-Day and Night Building Maintenance service further
and make his recommendation.
The Librarian informed the Board that the Friends of the Burlingame Public Library are
conducting a Book. Sale to be held on October 13th and 14th; and that the City had been
consulted regarding the puppet show, concessions and entertainment being planned on the
front lawn of the. Library.

As there was no further business the meeting was then adjourned at 8:32 p.m. with the
next Board meeting scheduled for October 16th, 1973 at 7:30 p.m.
Respectfully Subm t" ed,
GeoG'ge Paul Lechich, Clerk of the Board
LIBRARIAN' S REPORT
October 16, 1973
BUILDING:
The curb at the base of the children 's stack wall facing the street has been
repaired. This finishes whatever problems we have had with Morris Daley Inc.
The blower in the upper stack extension is still operating at half capacity.
The engineer has been notified.
The were no leaks in the Main Library, though there was one at the Branch
over the Lion's Den. Captain Russell and crew came at 8:00 P.M. and checked
the scuttle for stoppage. I certainly appreciate their prompt assistance as
our ladder would not reach the roof.
PARKING:
The library has been conducting its own survey of Lot A. It agrees, surprisingly,
with the percentage of occupancy figured on the basis of revenue collection made
by the Police Department.
We wish to know the availibility of spaces at certain times in order to determine
if five and ten-cent meters would not be more appropriate for the rest of Lot A.
The two-hour meters allowed for library parking have had little use. Most people
_ seem to prefer parking in the street and save five cents. When this results with
as many as sixteen cars in the street, it certainly does not lend for safety.
The two-hour parking can be completely filled (October 11th) and several of the
twenty-five cent, five to t.--n-hour meters, can be used the library patrons.
At that time (weekend of October 11th to 13th), there were several comments that
this was the first time they (the patron) had to pay a quarter to use a public
library.
It seems that there should be a few free, two-hour, parking spaces for library
patrons and the rest in the Bellevue side of Lot A shall be ten-hour parking,
but without five-hour meters---it might even be better in the Donnelly part of
Lot A. On the moring of October 12th, there were thirteen half-time parkers
there and thirteen half-time parkers in the library lot, with only six all-day.
AUDIO VISUAL:
Mr. Alfred Escoffier attended the Workshop on Media sponsored by the Association
of Bay Area Governments (ABAG) on Friday, September 14, 1973, and found the
experience most productive.
REFERENCE:
Mr. Warren Wickliffe attended the monthly Peninsula Library System Reference
Librarians ' meeting on September 20th.
Mrs. Joy Molder gave a book talk to the Brandeis Alumnae on September 18th.
- 2 -
YOUNG ADULT:
Mr. Alfred Escoffier is currently planning the BAYA (Bay Area Young Adult
Reviewers) meeting for the 27th of November. The theme will be cable television.
DISPLAYS:
Paintings by Ms. June Krieger are on display in the Reading and Browsing rooms
of the Main Library through the 31st of October.
FALL BOOK SALE:
The sale was an outstanding success, netting $2,325.00. This would not have
been possible without the hundreds of hours donated by the Friends, under the
chairmanship of Mrs. Adrian Williams. Further information will be noted in the
Friends Newsletter.
FALL FESTIVAL OF AUTHORS:
The Fall Festival of Authors held on Thursday, October 11th, was quite successful .
It was the first of what is hoped to be an annual Children 's Fall Festival of
Authors held in cooperation with the Burlingame School District.
The day began with an authors ' luncheon at the Garden Cafe. The authors then
visited the Burlingame schools and returned to the Children's Room at the Main
Library at 3:00 P.M. for a reception and spoke to over four hundred people.
Special thanks should be given to the Lions who contributed the money for the
authors ' lunches and to the Friends of the Library who paid and served the
-' refreshments at the reception.
In connection with the Book Sale, the Children's Room gave two puppet performances.
On Friday evening, a dramatization of a book entitled, "The Fat Cat", was performed
and followed by the puppet play, "Sylvester and the Magic Pebble." Carole Gilmore,
a new member of our staff, made the puppets and adapted two children's books for the
plays. She was assisted by two of our pages, Melissa Maxwell and Joan Foley.
On Saturday afternoon, Carole was assisted by another member of our staff, Barbara
Lazarus, to present "Dandelion." Other credits are given to Paul Bruce Lechich
for construction of the puppet theater, background sets done by Page David Blass,
art work by Page Lorraine Stone, and Brian Dilts, a former page, for designing the
invitations,
COOPERATIVE INFORMATION NETWORK:
Mrs. Patricia Bergsing attended two workshops held on October 2nd and 4th.
