CONVENTION: Mr. Lechich attended the California Library Association Convention's following meetings: Saturday: Congress and Library System and CLA/CIL Government Relations Committee-- reported on elsewhere by Mrs. Bergsing. Monday: Special Meeting--CIL program on cooperative network. Attended also by Mrs. Cohendet and Mrs. Phelan. A general summary of the present planned cooperative network. Also in the afternoon, a two-hour session on funding of libraries. Tuesday: Mr. Lechich attended "Copyright : Public Library Dilemma?" A most enlight- ening discussion by a panel of four with the emphasis on copying of phonograph records and cassette tapes. General conclusion was that they cannot be copied. Mr. Lechich attended the Library History Changes at which Richard Dilton spoke about Peter Force, the much neglected collector of the basic Americana History Collection of the Library of Congress. Dennis Thomison spoke on "The Coming Centennial of ALA and California." The ALA Conference will be in San Francisco for this centennial . Wednesday: Mr . Lechich attended the Second General Session on the Current and Future Plans of the ALA. The change in dues structure was the most discussed subject. Apparently, the membership is against the change. CLA Annual Membership Meeting- Committes of various reports, etc. A well-attended meeting at which a much better understanding of the current problems and structure were obtained. Mrs. Bergsing attended the Special Program Saturday afternoon on Taxation and Revenue along with Mr. Lynes, Mr. Hechinger, Mrs. Phelan and Mr . Lechich. The major part of the program was devoted to a question and answer session about the survey of library systems being undertaken by the State Department of Finance. Mrs. Bergsing thought all who attended felt it was a lively discussion. On Monday, Mrs. Bergsing attended a program on Interlibrary Cooperation, and another on Reference Network Evaluation. These were followed by the Annual Coulter Lecture which was on California in fiction from 1849-1899 by an antiquarian book dealer, John Swingle. All were interesting and worthwhile presentations. On Tuesday, the Bay Area Reference Center (BARC) presented a workshop on "Women's Place in the 70's" which Mrs. Bergsing attended briefly in the morning before the meeting of the Library History Chapter. The speaker at the history program was Richard Dilton, Sutro Librarian. He lectured about Peter Force, an early book collector and benefactor of the Library of Congress. The luncheon speaker was Nevin Busch, well-known author and film writer. In the afternoon, the Audio-Visual Chapter presented a program on contem- porary music and suggested ways and means for libraries to obtain these records for their collections. The Intellectual Freedom Committee held a discussion on recent Supreme Court decisions and their effect on libraries and the media. The day concluded with a talk by Zilpha Snyder, noted children's author, discussed her books and how she writes them. All in all Mrs. Bergsing thought it was a worthwhile conference, and came back with a number of new ideas. It was also interesting to see all the exhibits with the new equip- ment, services and systems available. 2 _ AUDIO VISUAL DEPARTMENT: Selections for the upcoming San Francisco Symphony season have been ordered. All but _ three or four selections are available on disc and will be cataloged as soon as they arrive. Most of these items are in great demand during the Symphony Season. A film series, to consist of both amateur films amde by local students and feature films (16mm) borrowed from local libraries, is in the planning stages for early 1974. It is hoped that a regular program can be arranged to allow for both an evening and an afternoon performance, the afternoon performance designed for younger and older patrons who do not wish to attend in the evening. The addition of a new cassette player and phonograph has had a considerable impact on the use of equipment. Use has nearly doubled over the previous month. It is hoped that we can purchase one more cassette player/phonograph for the A/V area soon. YOUNG ADULT DEPARTMENT: The Young Adult Department sponsored the regular semi-monthly meeting of BAYA (Bay Area Young Adult Reviewers) on Tuesday, November 27th, from 9 A.M. to 1 P.M. Members and guests in attendance were 64, one of the largest turnouts of the year. The program topic was Cable Television. Representatives from the University of California-Berkeley Library School showed video tapes concerning the use of video tape in libraries and was followed by a lively discussion. Mr. Escoffier hosted the meting with the Friends of the Library helping in serving refreshments. REFERENCE DEPARTMENT: Mrs. Molder gave a book talk to an independently organized group of women in San Carlos on November 13th, with a critical discussion of Scott Fitzgerald' s THE GREAT GATSBY. Mr. Wickliffe attended the monthly PLS reference librarians ' meeting at San Mateo Public Library on November 29th. Since San Mateo Public Library will be closed during the latter part of December for the moving of the collection to the newly-finished top floor, Mr. Wickliffe suggested that the December meting be held at our library, and arrangements have been made for the Community Room to be reserved for the meting on the 20th. CHILDREN'S DEPARTMENT: Due to the enthusiastic response to the puppet shows held during the Book Sale, a number of shows were presented during Book Week (November 12-18) . At the Branch Library, "Dandelion" was performed for the pre-school group and a group from the First Presbyterian Church Nursery School and repeated with the addition of a "Pooh" puppet play for the school age children. These puppet plays were also shown at the Main Library. Approximately 125 people attended each of the performances. Also, in connection with Book Week, a contest was held involving guessing the number of candies in a jar--to guess you had to take out a library book. The prize was 50 pieces of candy and a paperback book. A tie occured at the Main Library between Efrem Cray and Tim Murphy and at the Branch Library the prize was won by Deanna Brown.
