LIBRARIAN'S REPORT
.- March 19, 1974
MAIN DESK:
After a year and a half, a cabinet maker is finally making the necessary revisions
on the old circulation desk. Costers believes that we will have it here and installed
by the middle of May.
At that time, the present circulation desk will be moved to the rear of the reference
room and the other revisions in the audio visual, vertical file, and office areas will
be made.
CIRCULATION:
With the addition of the "Nancy Drew" series, the children circulation seems to have
picked up. The December 1973 fiction circulation was 1,764; January 1974 was 1859
or 5.4% more than December; February's was 1,950 or 4.8% more than January. It will
be interesting to see if this trend continues especially as we are adding more titles
in the ever popular series.
REFERENCE DEPARTMENT:
Staff activities during the month were notable. Mrs. Molder attended a workshop on
archival material at the Federal Archives and Records Center in San Bruno on the 8th.
She attended the BARC workshop on the energy crisis at the San Francisco Public Library
on the 20th. On the 25th, she gave a book talk to the Burlingame-Hillsborough Newcomers
Club reviewing The Tower, by Richard M. Stern.
Mr. Wickliffe attended the BARC workshop on the 21st, and gave a book talk to the
Friends of the Burlingame Public Library meeting on February 25th.
Mr. Escoffier attended a meeting on the community resources file, Informa, on the 5th,
as well as a workshop on audio visual equipment on the 7th. He also attended the BARC
workshop on the 20th.
AUDIO VISUAL DEPARTMENT:
The Friends of the Burlingame Public Library have purchased a Bell & Howell 16mm Projector,
16mm Film Splicer, Cassette Tape Splicer, and a Cassette Storage Drawer to add to our
audio visual section.
The amateur film festival held during the first three Tuesday evenings in February was an
enjoyable and successful event. The turnout for the amateur night was rewarding and
enthusiastic for audience and film-makers alike.
CHILDREN' S DEPARTMENT:
On February 26th, the Children 's Department gave a special talk to the mothers of pre-
school age children to inform them of the many new titles that are available for their
children at our Main and Branch libraries.
Several groups of second graders from St. Catherine 's School have been coming to the
library on a regular basis to learn how to research a subject.
2 _
Teachers have been borrowing collections for their classrooms and requesting collections
to be set aside for use in the library.
COOPERATIVE INFORMATION NETWORK:
The Board of Directors of the Cooperative Information Network of Santa Clara and San
Mateo Counties met on February l9th at the San Mateo County Educational Resources Center
in Redwood City. Since there are several thousand dollars of unexpended funds remaining
in the year ' s budget, the Board approved the following projects to be carried out before
the end of this fiscal year.
1 . A film presentation on on "How to Use the Network" to be developed for in-
service training of library personnel .
2. An internship program for the exchange of reference librarians for three-day
periods between C.I.N. libraries.
3. Three seminars, one on law, one on business and one on medicine to further
the knowledge of librarians of the resources in these three fields.
4. A union list of abstracts, indices and services of member libraries.
5. A general membership meeting to be held in mid-May with a guest speaker and
a key-note address by the California State Librarian.
6. Three mini-workshops to be held in North, Central and South San Mateo County
on March 25, 26 and 27 to acquaint library staff members on how to use the
network.
Next year 's plan of service and budget were discussed and if C.I.N. receives any federal
funds in 1974-1975,then Monterey and Santa Cruz Counties will be joining the Network.
