LIBRARIAN 'S REPORT
May 21 , 1974
CIRCULATION: The circulation increased (28,852) 7/ over April of 1973, however,
.. April of 1973 showed a decrease of 11% under April of 1972 (30,398) .
TRAFFIC: The Branch traffic as well as the Main traffic also increased. Though
the Main increased 15% over 1973, thus it seems as though more people are using
the library without borrowing as many books. Of course, reference is slowly
increasing.
REFERENCE DEPARTMENT: Mr. Escoffier and Mr. Wickliffe attended the BARC workshop
on Mental Health in America on April 24th and 25th. Mr. Wickliffe attended the
monthly PLS reference librarian 's meeting at San Mateo Public Library on April 18th.
Mrs. Molder attended the L.O.V,E, Project Coordinating Committee meeting on April 25th.
Mr. Escoffier mounted publicity and scheduled film showings and other events during
National Book Week. Mrs. Molder gave a book talk on the evening of the 25th, as part
of the National Book Week program.
AUDIO VISUAL DIVISION: A flier describing recent acquisitions in the Audio Visual
Division was compiled and distributed during National Library 42ek. The annotated
list included about 25 of the most popular items acquired during the past few weeks.
YOUNG ADULT DIVISION: A class from Moore School was instructed in the use of the
Library for a special research project. The class of 12-15 students was one of the
most interested and attentive the librarian has assisted.
COOPERATIVE INFORMATION NETWORK: The Cooperative Information Network celebrated its
second year of existence with a membership meeting at the Palo Alto Holiday Inn on
Friday, May 17th. The principal speakers for the event were Ms. Ethel Crockett,
California State Librarian and Congressman "Pete" McCloskey. Several hundred librarians
were present to hear about the history and growth of the network, and to learn its
current and future status, especially with regard to state and federal funding.
CHILDREN 'S DEPARTMENT: National Library Week was April 21-27. Highlighting the week' s
activities in the Children's Room were the puppet shows which were held on Wednesday,
April 24th at the Branch and Friday, April 26th at the Main Library. On Saturday,
April 27th, there was a special School-Age Story Hour. The program consisted of stories
about the Kappas -- kappas are Japanese river elves. Ms. Florence Day, a library patron,
loaned us her collection of kappas which she obtained while teaching in Japan. The
children were fascinated by the different types of kappas -- those made from wood, cloth
and other materials.
The following Saturday, Mrs. Coleman, a San Mateo resident, spoke to the School-Age Story
Hour about birds. The Saturday programs will continue through June 15th.
In our continuing effort to provide better library service (both school and public) to
our children, Mrs. Bergsing, Ms. Riordan and Mrs. Dunn have been meeting with Mrs. Earlene
Billing, Coordinator of the Instructional Multi Media Center for Burlingame schools, to
discuss areas where greater cooperation can occur. Of particular interest is the area of
programs -- book talks, author 's days ', P.T.A. talks and some type of cooperative book
selection. This is all in the consideration stage and further meetings will be held to
finalize thoughts and plans.

Everyone completing the survey and returning it will be given a chance to compete for
