Respectfully submitted:, George Paul Lechich Clerk of the Board LIBRARIAN'S REPORT August 20, 1974 CIRCULATION: The circulation increased 3% over July 1973. The Branch circulation picked up 6.3% but this month should show a pronounced decrease due to the confusion of the refurbishing job. It is interesting to note that dispite the emphasis on records by the Audio Visual Department. This circulation decreased 8.6%. PATRONS: We now have 18,399 registered patrons as compared to 17,946 in July 1973. However, we now have 3,043 PLS patrons who use our library, enough to warrant an assigned number. This is for our convenience as writing names and addresses on book cards take too much time. This number is written on the back of their city or county library card and recorded in a register in a manner similar to that used for our own patrons. The number of PLS patrons have increased from 2,025 in July of 1973 to 3,043 as noted above. This is not all as one-sided as it seems, as many of our patrons use San Mateo's film collection and their extensive business collection. REFERENCE DEPARTMENT: Mr. Escoffier was in charge of the Reference Department from July 1st to August 6th, 1974, while Mr. Wickliffe was on vacation. Mr. Escoffier attended the PLS Reference Librarians Committee meeting at San Mateo Public Library on July 25th. He also hosted the Bay Area Young Adult Reviewers meeting on July 23rd in our Community Room. SPECIAL PROJECTS : LOVE: The remaining funds available from the PLS funded outreach project were spent on demonstration cassettes which will be distributed for circula- tion to the general public later in the summor. Mrs. Molder coordinated the selection, acquisition, etc. for the system. Mrs. Molder is also compiling an index to all equipment availabe to shut-ins. DIALOG Demonstration: Ann Scott and Nancy De Wath of San Mateo County Reference Headquarters demonstrated the Dialog Computer System for retrieving scientific and technique information from computerized data bases. The new partially Federally funded project will enable CIN me-ber libraries to use on-line com- puterized data bases located at Lockheed, Palo Alto.
