selected to participate for nine minths. All CIN-related telephone calls made within
California will be posted on,a statistical form and submitted to CIN monthly for
reimbursement.
Results of the Library Borrowers Survey were distributed to the Trustees. The statistics
were reviewed and discussed.
CORRESPONDENCE:
A beautiful letter from Miss Hannah Shields, 807 Alameda de las Pulgas, San Mateo, was
received by Chairman Hechinger. Miss Shields expressed her appreciation for the service,
courtesy and quality of competence shown to her by the library staff.
The Trustees commented that such a letter reflected the City Librarian wi.th the highest
regard.
OLD BUSINESS:
Easton Drive Branch: The Librarian reported that we are still awaiting the arrival of
the rug and new furniture. Mrs. Bergsing reported that she and Mrs. Dunn spoke with
Mr. Dale Perkins, art coordinator for the Burlingame Elementary Schools, regarding
children's artwork for the Branch meeting room and Lion's Den. Mr. Lechich also stated
that Ace Roofing Company would be starting on the roof tomorrow. Due to the lack of
funds, the lower portion of the roof will be charged to the library's maintenance budget.
NEW BUSINESS:

LIBRARIAN'S REPORT
November 19, 1974
The circulation increased 3% over that of October 1973--the Branch circulation went
back to normal so that the total increase was at the Main.
The traffic increased 6,078 or 21%. This seems like much too large a figure even
though reference activity increased considerably--it may be possible there was an
error in reading the meter or something inactivating the counter. The next count
will perhaps give some indication if the present reading of 34,870 is correct.
The total book stock is the highest since the library's founding with 194, 520 acces-
sioned items. If we were to include the unaccessioned books and reserves it would
be over 210,000 volumes plus 11 , 173 pamphlets and 985 maps. A more active weeding
policy must be set up as well as more use made of the last copy retention center.
The back log in the Cataloging Department is gradually coming under control and even
though Mrs. Thomas has been ill, her new assistant Mrs. Esther Cummings, keeps the
wheels turning.
CHILDREN'S DEPARTMENT:
The latter part of October and the early part of November lends itself to promoting
children's services in that we have Halloween and Children's Book Week.
For Halloween, our regular pre-school story hours were devoted to stories dealing with
ghosts and other scaries. The special school-age story hour was entertained with a
visit from The Fat Cat, a pumpkin-spoon race and a flannel board presentation of the
"Old Woman and the Stranger". Candy and cookie treats were given to the children.
During Children 's Book Week, November 11th through 17th, classes from the schools will
visit the library for tours and book talks. We are also having a contest whereby the
children guess the number of candies in a jar. The children must have a library card
or be applying for one to make a guess. Paperbacks wilt be the prizes for the winners
of the contest.
Our authors festival will be held on May 1, 1975 and invitations have been sent to
many Bay Area authors.
REFERENCE DEPARTMENT:
A circulation survey was conducted from October 1-15 in an effort to discover those
areas of the book collection, particularly the non-fiction collection, were in heaviest
demand. The survey was drawn up by the Reference Department in an effort to set some
priorities for the upcoming budget year . The percentage totals will be compared to the
current buying schedules and new priorities for selection delineated. Another such
survey will be conducted in the Spring of 1975.
The retirement counseling program, coordinated by Mrs. Molder, continued through . the
month, to be completed November 7th. Mr. Steven Chios, lecturer in the field, led the
successful programs. Books and pamphlets on financial planning were made available to
participants.
A new reader-printer for microfilm has been ordered for the library through funds pro-
vided by the Friends of the Library. The new machine is a 3M Model 400M reader-printer,
with 14X power lens. Other options include a coin box for coin copies, a motorized
advance mechanism, and reversable carriage.

REFERENCE DEPARTMENT: Continued
Mrs. Molder drafted a Reference Service Policy for the Burlingame Library, outlining
those services the library can provide and those it cannot. The policy was discussed
at several department meetings and with the City Librarian and has now been accepted
for distribution. The policy is available at the reference desk and will be distri-
buted to Peninsula Library System member libraries.
PENINSULA LIBRARY SYSTEM:
The most exciting news of the month is that both the Menlo Park Public Library and
the South San Francisco Public Library have joined the Peninsula Library System. Both
will eventually have teletypes. Menlo Park holdings are currently listed in the Union
File at the Bibliographic Center and South San Francisco's selected holdings will be
listed during 1975. Delivery and reference are already operational .

BURLINGAME LIBRARY BORROWERS SURVEY
May 1 through May 15, 1974
The Burlingame Public Library recently conducted a two-week survey of its
patrons in an effort to determine how often they used the library, how they
traveled to and from the library, whether they shopped while in the area,
what they used the library for and what age group constituted the largest
number of borrowers during the sampling period.
1 . There were a total of 1, 114 survey forms completed and of those
752 were residents of Burlingame and 362 were non-residents.
The non-residents using the library were as follows :
San Mateo. . . . . . .. ... .. . . .166
Hillsborough.. . . . .. .. . . . . 112
Millbrae... . . . . ... . . . . ... 34
Other. . .. . . .. . . . . . .. .. . .. 50
362
Burlingame Residents - 752
2. In answer to the question about how often the borrower used the library,
they were as follows:
a) weekly or more often.. .. .. . . . .498
b) every two weeks. . . . . ... . ..... .270
c) monthly... ... . .. . . ..... .. .. . ..180
d) every two months. .. ........ .. . 67
e) less often. ... .. . ....... . .. ... 99
1, 114
f) never.. .. . . . . .oe .. . . .. .00 .. . .0 32
Never can be explained by some surveys having been distributed from the
Library's Booth at "Art in the Park". If they answered "never" we did not
tally any of the remainder of their surveys.
3. In answer to question 93,
the results were as follows :
Do you travel to the library by--
Auto, . . . . . . . o -o. . . . . . . *.*770
y--
Auto. . . . . . . . . ... . . . . . . ...770
Bicycle. . . . . . . . .. .. . . . .. .235
Walking. . . . . . . . .. . . . .. .. .362
Public Transportation. . .. 10
Other.... . . . .... . . . . . . . .. 10
1 ,387
The discrepancy between the total and the number of people completing the
survey is that quite a few people come to the library by more than one
method. Sometimes they walk and sometimes they drive a car or take a
bicycle. The majority of people park in the lot or on the street and
well over half of the people who drive complained about the parking
meters in the lot.
4. Question #4 -- During your trips to the library, do you shop in the area?
Residents... .. . . . . . .752 Non-Residents. . . . . . .. .362
Yes... . . . . . ...388 Yes. .... . . . 0 . . . . Igo
No.. .. . . . . . ...302 No. ... . . . ... . .. . 121

5. Question #5 -- On visits to the library do you--
a) borrow books.. . . . . . . . . .. .. ... .... . ...933
b) seek factual information. . . . . . . . .. ...390
c) attend programs or meetings. .. . . .. .. . 44
d) browse. .* . . . . . .. . . . 0. 00. . . . .. .0. .. . . .383
e) use audio visual equipment. .... . .. .. . 66
f) seek community information. . . . .. . . . . . 104
g) other. . . . . . . .. . . . . . . . . .. ..... .. ... ... 59
1,979
The higher count indicates that many patrons use the library for more
than one activity.
6. Question #6 -- Do you have a Burlingame Library Card?
Yes. ..,.. .. .. . . . • . . . •833
No.. . .. ... . . . . . .. .. . .215
1,048
7. Question #7 -- Do you use other libraries?
Yes, .**. . . . .... . . . . .456
No.... .. . . . . .438
894
In answer to the questions what other types of libraries were used and
where, almost every other library in the Bay Area was mentioned at least
once, but about 1/3 of those using other libraries mentioned San Mateo
Public Library.
8. Question #8 -- Asked patron completing the questionnaire to identify
whether they were--
Male.. .. . . .. . . .. . . . .332
ere--Male.. .. . . .. . . .. . . . .332
or
Female. .. .. . . . .... . .657

In the following age ranges:
a) under 12. .. ... . .. . . ... .. 28
b) 12-17. ..... . .. .. . . . .. . .. 135
c) 18-22.... ... . . . .... . .. .. 99

f) 50-65.... . . . .. .. .. .00.00195
g) over 65.... . . . . .. ....... 92

Not all figures reflect the total number of surveys completed because
everyone did not answer all the questions.
