LIBRARIAN'S REPORT:
Trustee Phelan commented that the Librarian's report on the Branch circulation based on the
statistics of the past twenty years was very interesting. The Librarian stated that it will
be interesting to observe the Branch's circulation statistics now that the Branch library
has been remodeled.
CORRESPONDENCE:
A letter along with a $50 donation was received from Mr. Charles Delgado, of 413 Howard Avenue,
Burlingame. The Librarian noted that this was not the first time Mr. Delgado has made contri-
butions to our library.
A letter from Dr. Irene Barasch, a veteran patron of our library, was read and discussed. An
explanation of Dr. Barasch's letter, written by Mr. Wickliffe, of the Reference Department, was
also read.
A special thank-you to the Burlingame Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution for
their gift of an American Flag to the Easton Branch Library.

LIBRARIAN'S REPORT
February 18, 1975
CIRCULATION:
The circulation increased 10% over January 1974. This is the same percentage increase
as last month and the highest January circulation ever at the Main. The Branch circu-
lation was 18% more than January 1974, 7.9% more than 1973 and .016% more than 1972,
but 6% less than January 1971 and 21% less than 1970. It will be interesting to follow
(hopefully) the effect of the refurbishing on the increased use of the Branch.
TRAFFIC:
The traffic count at the Main of 31,743 is the highest January count since we started
taking the count, 41% higher. than 1970. This would indicate that many more people
were using the library during January than ever before. We have 18,518 registered
patrons and 3,571 system non-resident patrons who use the library enough to warrant
having a number put on their card. According to our use survey, over half (52.4%)
of the non-resident system patrons shop in Burlingame, therefore, over 1,785 patrons
probably shop at least twice or more a month. Of course, this is the steady user and
there are quite a few others who come from time to time.
The additional patrons, those with cards and those without, are causing us to buy more
duplicate copies of the more popular books in order to keep our own patrons satisfied.
This will, in time, change our library as we will be buying 4,500 titles instead of
6,000 but with the right cooperation with other system libraries, the effect should not
be noticeable. Buying less titles should also result in saving of cataloging expense.
REFERENCE DEPARTMENT:
As an experimental move, the Audio Visual division is taking reservations on equipment,
particularly projectors, record players, etc. , for both in-house and external use. .
A circulation survey is being conducted during February 3-18, 1975 to learn what subject
areas are the most popular. A similar survey was taken last fall. The results of the
two surveys will help staff to formulate goals for next year's materials budget.
EASTON BRANCH LIBRARY OPEN HOUSE:
The Open House at the Easton Branch Library on Sunday, January 26th was an unqualified
success. Between 300 and 400 library patrons and local officials attended the event to
view the results of the current remodeling. Everyone seemed pleased with the redecorating
and also enjoyed the warm spicy punch and home-made cookies provided by the Friends of
the Library. The Mills High School String Ensemble added a very talented and festive
background to the occasion.
COOPERATIVE INFORMATION NETWORK:
C.I.N. has been engaged in a variety of projects during the past few months. First, the
network has been conducting a series of library tours and one-day seminars focusing on
visits to collections and libraries of special interest. Next, a staff exchange program
is currently in progress with a reference librarian from one library exchanging jobs with
a reference librarian from another library for a day. Beginning in February, C.I.N. has
.hired a half-time professional librarian to do research and answer ,questions at Stanford
Library for all the participating member libraries in the Network. We hope this will
expedite reference requests and make the resources of: Stanford more useful and accessible.
