Traffic increased 10.6% and interlibrary loans increased 12.2%. Reference activity increased 13.3%. There are 464 additional registered Burlingame card holders and 1,033 additional Peninsula Library System patrons. Comparisons of our library to other libraries in the System including Palo Alto were compiled. In the process of trying to establish the rating as to size, accomplisiLmonts, costs, etc. We have constructed a series of block graphs and tables in air effort to convince the Salary and Classification Survey team from the State Cooperative Personnel Services that "the Burlingame Library System is (not) one of the smaller operations compared to the seven listed below (all except County)". We are first in some respects and might possibly be ranked fourth--but no lower. Children's Department: A number of our nursery schools have visited the library recently. Although the children are only 2=2 and 3 years old, they seem to enjoy being read a picture story, looking at the picture books and playing with the puzzles. Return visits have been planned. Children's Book Week is November 16th through 22nd. The display of picture books in the children's room are books chosen by the Children's Book Showcase for their graphic as well as literary contents and represent superior book-making. Sybil Warsowe, ou.r Tuesday night speaker, will also be discussing picture books and illustrations of the last fifteen years.. The purpose of the display and our Tuesday night speaker, Sybil Warsowe, is to make parents aware of the quality of books that are available to their children and that, hopefully, they will expose their children to them. Puppet shows and mime will be performed on Monday, November 17th, at the Main Library and Wednesday, November 19th, at the Branch. Reference Department: The Audio Visual Section has run more copies of the popular film list (listing all 8mm films available at the library). In addition, a list of 25 recently received cassettes is also available. The Reference Department is encouraging local area teachers to contact the Reference Department directly for their special class needs. Due to problems over the last few months, reserve collections for classes will be kept to a minimum.
