RESOLUTION NO. 109-2009
RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BURLINGAME HONORING
JACK L.VAN ETTEN ON HIS RETIREMENT ON DECEMBER 18, 2009 AND FOR HIS 36

YEARS OF SERVICE TO THE CITIZENS OF BURLINGAME
RESOLVED, by the City Council of the City of Burlingame that:
WHEREAS, Chief of Police Jack L. Van Etten will officially retire from the Burlingame Police
Department after 36 years of dedicated law enforcement service to the communities in which he served on
both a personal and professional level; and
WHEREAS, Chief Van Etten began his law enforcement career with the San Mateo County
Sheriff's Office Cadet Program and was hired by the City of Burlingame as a full-time police officer in
1974; and
WHEREAS, Chief Van Etten rose through the ranks of Police Sergeant, Police Commander and

was appointed Chief of Police in May 2004; and
WHEREAS, Chief Van Etten has worked in virtually every sworn position and capacity within the
department, including specialized assignments as a Detective, S.W.A.T. Operator, Field Training Officer,
Firearms Instructor; and
WHEREAS, Chief Van Etten is a graduate of Serra High School, he earned an Associate in Arts
Degree from the College of San Mateo, and a Bachelor's Degree from the University of San Francisco, and
a Master's Degree from Golden Gate University, Chief Van Etten is also a graduate of the prestigious

Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy; and
WHEREAS, after 36 years of unselfish dedication and devotion to law enforcement and the
community he loves, Chief Van Etten will retire to spend more time with his loving wife of 33 years, Lynn
and their daughter Kristi; and

NOW, THEREFORE, this City Council honors Jack L. Van Etten on his retirement and for his 36
years of service to the citizens of Burlingame.
