HomeMy WebLinkAboutReso - CC - 076-2010RESOLUTION NO. 76-2010 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BURLINGAME IN OPPOSITION TO STATE PROPOSITION 23 ON THE NOVEMBER 2010 BALLOT WHEREAS, the State of California adopted groundbreaking climate action protection in AB32 in 2006 and has since become a leader in the United States in clean industry innovation and investment; and, WHEREAS, the City Council of Burlingame has adopted its own Climate Action Plan after receiving widespread public support and input for the initiative; and, WHEREAS, the City of Burlingame has three major highways that traverse it and therefore is as concerned as any other city about air quality and vehicle emissions; and WHEREAS, the City and community of Burlingame welcomes green businesses and innovative energy companies to our city, known as the City of Trees; and WHEREAS, Proposition 23 on the November ballot, which is funded mainly by oil, chemical and timber companies that reside out of state, would kill AB 32 by setting unrealistic trigger events, thereby endangering national security by enhancing our reliance on fossil fuels, nearly 60% of which are imported, and exacerbating the output of greenhouse gases; and WHEREAS, opposition to Prop 23 has been voiced by the County of San Mateo, the City and County of San Francisco, many other cities and towns in California, and by political groups and parties of all stripes; and WHEREAS, the people of Burlingame appreciate and enjoy the great states of Kansas and Texas, but do not appreciate Kansans and Texans, who are backing Prop 23, telling us what to do; NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BURLINGAME HEREBY RESOLVES AS FOLLOWS: The City Council of the City of Burlingame is in opposition to Proposition 23 on the November 2010 Ballot. Cathy Baylock, Mayor I, Mary Ellen Kearney, City Clerk of the City of Burlingame, do hereby certify that the foregoing Resolution was introduced at a regular meeting of the City Council held on the 4th day of October, 2010, and adopted thereafter by the following vote: AYES: Councilmember: Baylock, Brownrigg, Deal, Nagel NOES: Councilmember: ABSENT: Councilmember: Keighran Mary Ellen Kearney, City Clerk
