RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BURLINGAME
APPLAUDING BURLINGAME YOUTH BASEBALL'S ASSOCIATION 20TH
ANNIVERSARY
WHEREAS, Burlingame Youth Baseball Association (BYBA), founded in
1992, is playing and celebrating its 201h season of youth baseball for Burlingame
and Hillsborough families; and
WHEREAS, BYBA's philosophy from the outset has been to include,
instruct and inspire youth and to introduce them to the great sport of baseball
and all its intricacies; and
WHEREAS, BYBA's participation rates have grown steadily since inception,
generally including between 400 and 500 youth/year, and hosting a record 563
players in 2012; and
WHEREAS, BYBA's welcoming attitude and inclusive policy on playing have
given athletic opportunities to children of varying abilities and to children who
are developmentally challenged, expanding the experience of baseball to many
and teaching acceptance to all; and
WHEREAS, BYBA is entirely resident -managed and resident -coached,
building community ties among families and children that can last a lifetime and
also de-emphasizing a "winning at all cost" philosophy that sometimes occurs on
teams managed by paid staff; and
WHEREAS, BYBA's two annual baseball tournaments bring visitors from
around the region to Burlingame, to the benefit of local restaurants, stores and
hotels; and
WHEREAS, BYBA's umpiring system provides employment for Burlingame
youth, introducing many boys and girls for the first time to gainful employment
and to the responsibilities that go with that; and
WHEREAS, BYBA's low-pressure, instruction -based approach to baseball
has nevertheless sent players to the Major Leagues and into collegiate -level
umpiring; and
WHEREAS, to paraphrase the words of Yogi Berra, "Burlingame youth
baseball is a wonderful thing— it keeps the kids out of the house and the parents
off the streets."
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of
Burlingame does hereby applaud BYBA, its Board, its Coaches, its Players (past
and present), its Umpires, and its multiple contributions to our great City and
community, and wishes it many more decades of fun and fair play.
Deal, ayor Vice Mayor Ann Keighran
