7. CURRENT BUSINESS
7.1 Pedestrian Mall concept — Discussion
Mr. Chou reported that last month there was a very brief discussion about a Pedestrian
Mall concept. He stated that the direction of this evening's discussion should be
determining what organization this concept should be proposed to and then for Council
direction.
It was suggested that the concept be presented to Chamber of Commerce to see if
there is interest.
Discussion occurred regarding "Streets Alive" which involves multiple cities. It was
suggested that someone contact the "Streets Alive" parent organization and inquire as
to how a City could be involved in that event.
Commissioner Londer reported that a meeting is coming up in Redwood City and he
would attend the meeting and report back.
8. Staff Reports
8.1 Traffic Engineer's Report
8.1.1 101 Auxiliary Lane Project —Staff Update

8.2.1 General/Selective Traffic Enforcement Report —Staff Update
Officer Witt reported that the focus of last month centered around the schools,
particularly Mercy High School, as there were complaints regarding student and
parent drivers.
He added that Police staff would also focus during the summer on the main
thoroughfares, especially on Bayshore, due to the tourist season.
Officer Witt
also reported that the Red Flex camera went off line on June 1, 2010.

8.3.1 Miscellaneous Comments and Concerns
None.

10. COMMISSION &COMMITTEE REPORTS
10.1 Burlingame Bicycle/Pedestrian Advisory committee (B/PAC)
Commissioner Simonson reported that the Safe Route to Schools Grant requests for
proposals were beyond the scope of what the City of Burlingame could put together
as far as minimum dollar amount and complexity. She reported that at this time, the
City elected to passing on this grant unless the County changes the parameters on
their requests for proposals.
Commissioner Simonson reported that the Burlingame Criterium was coming up on
June 27th and wanted to get a little more public relations on this event. She also
stated that she wanted this in conjunction with the City getting more visibility of the
B/PAC Committee.
Mr. Chou added that the SHARROWS markings were added onto California Drive.
10.2 Website/Communications Subcommittee
Commissioner Akers reported that he would be meeting with Mr. Chou next
regarding this subcommittee. He reported that there were some preliminary
ideas
about setting up email accounts as a commission group with the city domain
and photo of the commission as a group or individuals on the website.

SUBJECT: Item 7.1 –Height Restriction in Bayshore/Gilbreth Industrial Area
Meeting
Date: August 12, 2010
RECOMMENDATION: To receive public comment and either concur or object with staff on the
installation of 6400t Height Restriction signs for Hinckley, Stanton, Malcolm, Mitten, and Cowan Roads
(formerly known as the East Millsdale Industrial Park).
BACKGROUND: The City was approached by a

e streets for the legal 72 -hour period. The

Hers, and parking difficulties for regular -hour
DISCUSSION: The request deals with the industrial area bounded within Bayshore Highway, Gilbreth
Road, Cowan Road, and Mahler Road. The streets affected by the proposed restrictions are Hinckley,
Stanton, Malcolm, Mitten, and Cowan Roads. Currently, these streets do not have any parking
restrictions other than minor red zones or 24 -minute green zones. Mahler Road and Gilbreth Road are
not included in this proposal since new height -restriction were recently authorized and will be
implemented in the very near future.
The implementation of the proposed height -limit restriction will best serve the area parking needs by
eliminating truck storage problems, sight-visty problems at driveways and street corners, and allow
for more on -street parking for businesses.
Authorization to implement this restriction belongs to the Traffic Engineer, and typically, analysis and
implementation is done directly on a staff level. However, staff believes that in this situation, it would be
more advantageous for the City to hear from as many of the effected businesses as possible, especially
since the proposed restriction will be wide spread and effect several streets and over six hundred
property owners.
