ECR/Ray/Rosedale
X-ING Guard
MEETING DATE:
February 12, 2015
To: Traffic Safety and Parking Commission
Date: February 12, 2015
From: Andrew Wong, Transportation Engineer – (650) 558-7230
Subject: Item 7.a – El Camino Real/Ray Drive/ Rosedale Drive Crossing Guard
Update (Revised)
RECOMMENDATION: That the Commission receive an update regarding the addition of a
second crossing guard for Lincoln Elementary, to be stationed at El Camino Real/Ray
Drive/Rosedale Drive.
BACKGROUND: Residents in the area surrounding EL Camino Real/Ray Drive/Rosedale
Drive had requested a school crossing guard to assist students crossing El Camino Real. The
current situation regarding crossing guards is that each school has one school crossing guard
assigned to it. Lincoln Elementary already has a crossing guard assigned at El Camino
Real/Adeline. In the past, the program was funded 50% by the Burlingame School District, with
a matching 50% by the City.
DISCUSSION: In late December 2014, the City Manager, Lisa Goldman authorized the
allocation of funds for the City’s half of the second crossing guard. This decision was based on
input from Public Works staff; as well as discussions with the both the City Council and the
affected community. The authorization to fund the crossing guard was contingent upon the vote
of the Burlingame School District to fund their portion. Subsequently on January 13, 2015, the
Burlingame School District Board met, and then provided approval to the School Superintendent
to fund a second school crossing guard for Lincoln Elementary at the El Camino Real/Ray
Drive/Rosedale Drive intersection. On January 26, the crossing guard was stationed at the
intersection.
