L.
Children's Mural:
The Foundation is exploring the concept of a permanent mural in the
children's room featuring storybook and fairy tale characters designed to
make the Children's Room a primary destination for parents and
children. The mural would cover the entire north wall of the main library
children's room with a wide variety of ancient, historical and current
characters from books.
A similar mural has been a great hit at the Belvedere/Tiburon Public
Library. Conceptual drawings will be available. Artist Mark Evans will be
on hand to discuss your favorite characters for the mural!
This is a long term project expected to be funded over time. This will be a
lasting work for generations to come.

"Birthday Bash" Fundraiser
As of this writing, the Fundraiser registration numbers 160 guests. The
Fundraiser celebrated the Foundation's 10 year anniversary. The focus of
the event was on children and families. The Walden Marionettes provided
entertainment, along with a Sing Along with Jim Stevens. Refreshments
included hot dogs, popcorn, and birthday cake! There were opportunities
to win many prizes donated by Burlingame businesses. The grand prize
was a fully paid trip for 4 to Disneyland!
I would like to offer my thanks to the volunteer committee who created
this special event: Rachel Rothe, Event chair; Lisa Rosenthal; Kris
Cannon; Carol Rossi; Mary Blythe; Jim Cannon; Chip Coleman; Jane
Dunbar; Debbie Grewal; Laurelle Gutierrez-Lundquist; Stephen
Hamilton; John Root; Heidi Kenney; Mark Lucchesi; Jim Nagel; Scott
Nedwick; and Lauren Rosen. Staff members, Sidney Poland, Sue
Reiterman, Pat Harding, Cathy Somerton, Jan Eustis, Kathy von
Mayrhauser and a host of other staff volunteers were available to make
the event a great success. I will have more information on the success of
the event at your meeting.
New Popular Materials Room!
Thanks to a generous gift from the Burlingame Library Foundation, our
Popular Materials Room has taken on a new "bookstore" type look.
Rolling shelving with slanted shelves help make the new books display
fun and easy to use. Clear acrylic display stands help show off the books
many with their covers face out for maximum exposure.
"Quick Picks" is a new collection of quality trade paperbacks is now
available. All are fully cataloged and in the database. These books have
attractive plastic covers. Our new policy on trade paperbacks is that
they must be returned for the next user.
Older magazines in the popular area have been moved to the lower level
and the new magazines are shown off with their covers facing out. Many
of the worn plastic display jackets have been replaced. Display units
were also installed in the main lobby for specific seasonal displays.
The new arrangement maximizes self-service, which not only attracts the
users, but helps staff work individually with users as our circulation
continues to climb.
"Boy Reading" Statue Installed
The gift of a bronze statue from the Friends of Former Mayor Gloria
Barton was installed in the lobby just outside the children's room
entrance. The statue was purchased and installed with gifts from Gloria's
many friends in the community. A bronze plaque commemorates the gift.
Personnel Issues
We are still down 3 FTE staff for medical reasons. I have hired Tim
Wallace, cataloger at the San Bruno Library. He will work evenings and
weekends for the next 4 to 5 months to clear up our backlog of non-
fiction and children's materials. Tim is an experienced cataloger and
knows PLS and the new automated system. He should be an asset to
helping us catch up.
Foundation Book Sale
Plans are underway for the Foundation Book Sale on October 21, 22, 23.
Co-chair Jim Cannon has been working with the volunteers to get ready
for the sale. A new street banner will go up over Burlingame Avenue the
week of the sale.
