ING ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF BURLINGA;E
A14D PROVIDING PROTECTIO14 TO ALL WOODEN
CONSTRUCTIONS OF SAME.
The City Council of the City of 3urlingame do ordain
as follows, of -Tait:
Section I. All exterior walls of wood frame buildings
shall be supported on continuous masonry or reinforced concrete
walls or footings and shall be of sufficient size to safely support
the loads imposed as determined from the character of the soil,
excepting however,for buildings other than residence building of
post and girder construction continuous wells and footings shall
not be required, and excepting a one story building other than a
dwelling, which does not exceed four hundred (400) square feet
in area, it may be constructed without a masonry or reinforced
concrete foundation provided such building is placed on all-he,,^rt
redwood, cedar or Cypress, or on a creosoted wood mudsill.
Section II. Screened openings through foundation walls
shall be provided for cross ventilation under the first floor on
the oasis of two (2) s,uare feet for each twenty-five (25) lineal
feet or major fracture thereof of exterior wall, except that such
openings need not be placed in the front of such building. The
screen for covering such openings shall have a maximum of one-half
() inch mesh and shall be galvanized.
Section III. Timber to be used in contactwith the earth
shall L>e thoroughly impregn.ted by a standard pressure process with
coal tar creosote or other approved preservative, except qs herein
otherwise provided. Timber should be completely frameda
treatment whenever posoible, taut when cutting after treatment is
una.voidaole the cut surfaces shall be thoroughly coated with
ccs.l tar creosote or other approved preserv,,.tive; and a wood not
impregnated with approved preservative ,hall not be placed in contact
with the earth or within twelve (12) inches thereof, and masonry
foundations and footings shall be laid in Portland cement mortar.
Foundations built up of masonry units, wh*44*4�.or solid, shall
be capped below woodwork with ^..t least one (1) inch of Portland
cement mortar, cement and slate or other ri.pproved seal.
Section IV. A termite shield shill ce provided, which
shall continue completely around the surface of the foundation
'below the woodwork of the building onr.-joth the inside and outside
surfaces. Such shield may be formed of a strip of non-corroda4le
metal firmly inserted in the surface of the masonry or between the
foundation ana the wood, with the projecting edge bent aownward
at an ale of forty-five (45) degrees and extending horizontally
at least two (2) inches from the face of the foundation; floor
sleepers and joists, embedded in masonry or concrete or laid on
concrete, which is in contact with the earth., shall be impregnated
with an a._,proved preservative and untreated wooden posts or
columns supported by concrete floors must rest upon a metal or
concrete footing projecting at least two (2) inches above the
finished floor.
Section. V. Any person, firm or corporation violating
^.ny of the provisions of this ordin,�.nce shall be f ined in the sum
not to exceed One Hundred Dollars ($100.00) or :,y imprisonment in
the city jail not to exceed sixty (60) days, or by Both said fine
and imprisonment.
Section VI. This ordinance shall pu:lishea in the
"!surlingame Advance :tar" for the period required by law and be in
fore and effect from aria after the date of its passage.
