Librarian Bergsing said that the new carpet for the
Circulation area is due to be installed on Saturday night .
Mrs . Molder reported that she is very pleased with
the number of applicants that she has interviewed for the

LIBRARIAN'S REPORT - AUGUST 16th , 1983
DUNCAN PATIO: The architect , Bob Williams , completed
the detailed specifications , and six local general
contractors have picked up copies of the plans .
Trustee Harvey is contacting additional sub-contractors .
We hope to have all the bids returned by Friday,
August 19th , so we can make a decision and hopefully
begin work this month. I have contacted , Rich Quadri ,
the Director of the Park Department , regarding the
removal of the existing plants in the patio and trans-
planting them to the City Parks . We are meeting
next week.
NEW CARPET: The new carpet was installed on schedule
without incident . We are all very pleased with it ,
and we only wish we could have done more of the main
floor.
AUTOMATED CIRCL- ^TION: Conversion is continuing ,
and as people are trained our input of records is
speeding up. As of August 15th , we will have hired
five parttime temporary employees to assist us in
this long and tedious process . We are still targeting
next summer to come "online" , that is , to begin
circulating books on the automated system. Some
of the smaller City libraries , and the branches of
the County Library are hoping to begin circulating
books much sooner than that around the first of
January.
WARREN WICKLIFFE'S RETIREMENT PARTY: Warren 's party
was a big success , I think , and he was pleased , which
was the entire purpose of the event . Many members
of the staff worked hard to have everything fun and
enjoyable , and I know you join with me in saying
"thank you" . It was particularly nice that Councilwoman
Barton and Mayor Crosby were able to attend . The
Mayor was on the Library Board when Warren was appointed
Thursday , August 11th , was Warren 's last day.

MORE STATISTICS: I am attaching a summary of Reference
transactions and Audio-Visual circulation statistics
that Al Eseoffier compiled . This gives a further
break-down of the figures we included in last month's
report .
P. L. S. NEWS: The P.L.S. Board of Directors is holding
interviews on Friday , August 12th , to fill the position
of Director that was left vacant when Jane Light
resigned to become Assistant City Librarian of Redwood
City. If a decision is made by next Tuesday, I ' ll
let you know at your meeting. As Escoffier was elected
the new Chairman of the P.L.S. Reference Committee .
CHILDREN'S DEPARTMENT: The Summer Reading Club party
will be held on Wednesday , August 24th , at 2 :00pm
in the Community Room. Mrs . Leach is expecting around
200 children. The entertainment this year will be
"Marcus , the Magnificent" , a magician , and , as always ,
all the Club supplies and the party entertainment
and refreshments have been paid for by the Burlingame
Lions Club . You are all invited to attend .
VOLUNTEER ACTIVITY: In time for your meeting we
will have a summary of volunteer activity during
1982-1983 , as compiled by Mrs . Pamela Stamnes. We
are hoping that volunteer hours will increase even
more during 1983/84 . Pamela is doing a wonderful
job.
PROGRAMMING/EXHIBITS: Marge Johansen gave the monthly
book talk at the Easton Drive Branch Library on June
28th. The books discussed included : Tannahills '
A Dark and Distant Shore ; Peter 's Silhouette in
Scarlet Heaven ' s Wildcliffe Bird; Gage ' s Eleni ;
and Jack Fleming 's Forgotten News . Mr. Wacek Dennaoui
of Pacific Cable TV, visited the BookChat with the
exciting news that the' "Chat" would be televised
in September , October , November and December. Time -
and dates will be determined later .
