BOARD OF TRUSTEES
MINUTES
NOVEMBr 2YtT, 1984
CALL TO ORDER:
The meeting of November 20th , 1984 was called to order
at 4 :30pm by President Weatherbe , and Mrs . Bergsing introduced
new Trustee Carol Mink to the Board members .
Trustees Present : Trustees Nagle , Blevins , Mink , Harvey ,
and Weatherbe
Trustees Absent : None
Also Present : Mrs . Judy Gladysz , Library Secretary
Mr . AI Escoffier , Ass ' t . City Librarian
BILLS :
City checks in the amount of $20 ,458 .30 , and Special
Fund checks in the amount of $1 , 978 . 99 , were approved to be
paid on a motion made by Trustee Nagle , seconded by Trustee
Harvey , and carried .
MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF OCTOBER 16th , 1984 :
The' Minutes of October 16th , 1984 were corrected
to read , under "BILLS" , the bills were approved to be paid
on a motion made by Trustee Nagle , seconded by Trustee Blevins
and carried . Also , under "MISCELLANEOUS" , Trustee Blevins
asked Trustee Nagle if he had spoken with Jerry Coleman . After
the corrections had been made , the minutes were approved as
corrected and ordered filed .
CORRESPONDENCE :
Secretary Harvey read a letter from Mr . George Paul
Lechich complimenting the Library Board of Trustees for the
beautiful job they had done on the Duncan Patio .
LIBRARIAN ' S REPORT :
Automated Circulation : Trustee Nagle stated his concern about
the lack of statistics available from Geac . Mr . Escoffier
explained to him that the Libraries in the System need to decide
and agree upon which statistics are the most important . Trustee
Nagle asked if there was a committee , and Mr . Escoffier said
this is a brand new problem , and yes , the System libraries

are looking at ways to lessen the burden of going through stacks
of paperwork to draw out the statistics . Trustee Mink asked
if statistics would be available on individual people such
as reading interests , etc . Mr . Escoffier replied that statistics
would be available in general areas but not on an individual
patron basis .
Trustee Blevins asked if there is room for expansion on
Geac . Al replied , yes , there is room for enhancements .
Personnel : Librarian Bergsing said that Linda Saltzer , Head
of Technical Services , would be resigning effective November
30th , and Al and she would be recruiting at C . L .R . Conference .
Programming : Librarian Bergsing said the Children ' s Halloween
Program was outstanding . It was enjoyed by children of all
ages .
Outreach : Trustee Mink asked Librarian Bergsing if the Library ' s
Outreach Program is coordinating with Peninsula Hospitals Senior
Center . Librarian Bergsing replied that the Library has been
in touch with Peninsula Hospital , but , had been told to wait
until spring or later . At the moment , P . L .S . is showing films
at Peninsula Hospital for the Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation
Program .
Branch Library : Librarian Bergsing said that Cathy Somerton ,
the Branch Librarian is currently focusing on new titles , in
paperback , for the young adult collection . Trustee Weatherbe
asked if this meant a cut in the service . Mrs . Bergsing explained
that the existing collection was old and out of date , and the
paperbacks were more popular with the high school students
than the hard-cover books . This is a way to get more popular ,
newer titles in the collection for the same cost .
UNFINISHED BUSINESS :
None
NEW BUSINESS :
P . L .S. Advisory Board Member : Librarian Bergsing explained
to the Trustees that Burlingame had not been represented on
the P . L . S . Advisory Board since Leo Kriloff ' s death . Trustee
�— Nagle asked how long a term was and Mrs . Bergsing told him
each representative could serve a total of two 2-year terms .
Trustee Mink volunteered to be Burlingame ' s representative .

There was some discussion and Trustee Nagle made a motion
to recommend that Trustee Mink be recommended to the City Council
as Burlingame ' s representative to the Peninsula Library System
Advisory Board . The motion was seconded by Trustee Harvey
and carried .
Report on Library Tour - Trustees Blevins & Mink : Both Trustees
Blevins and Mink said they had enjoyed the tour of the Main
Library , and had learned a great deal about the "behind the
scenes " operations . Trustee Blevins said she had subsequently
visited the Branch Library and thought it was charming . Trustee
Mink stated she was impressed with the size of the automated
system database .
Staff Christmas Party : Trustee Weatherbe made a motion for
the Special Fund to contribute to the Staff Christmas Party
in the amount of $150 .00 . The motion was seconded by Trustee
Mink and carried .
Introduction of Marge Johanson , Librarian I and Donna Ridley
Smith , Librarian III : Librarian Bergsing introducted Marge
Johanson and Donna Ridley Smith to the Board of Trustees .
Donna gave some background on her past experience . Marge said
she has been with the Burlingame Public Library since 1982
and told of some of her other experience . The Board welcomed
them and said how pleased they were to have them .
Miscellaneous : Mrs . Bergsing mentioned , in passing , that
the two newest Board members had received their new computerized
library cards , but some of the other Board members had not
yet re-registered .
The Board members thanked firs . Bergsing for the nice cookies
and wine and cider she brought to the meeting .
ADJOURNMENT :
The meeting of November 20th , 1984 was adjourned at 5 : 20pm
with the next meeting scheduled for December 18th , 1984 , in
the California Room .
