Mrs. Bergsing called the Board's attention to the letter received from Pacific Bell , that states beginning on October 1st , all the libraries in the State of California will be charged for all telephone directories published by non-Pacific Bell companies. In the case of the Burlingame Library this will represent an additional cost to the book budget of approximately $2,500+. In terms of libraries throughout the State, it will be a cost of hundreds of thousands of dollars. Mrs . Bergsing said an additional irony is that when a customer calls PacTel requesting information available in non-local directories, the phone company refers people to thier local public library for assistance. The California Library Association and librarians all over the State intend to send letters of protest both to the phone company and the P.U.C. Trustee Nagle noted an increase in Branch circulation statistics.
