BOARD OF TRUSTEES
MINUTES
AUGUST 18TH, 1987
CALL TO ORDER:
A duly noticed regular meeting of the Burlingame Public Library Board
of Trustees was held on the above date in the California Room of the
Burlingame Public Library. The meeting was called to order at 4 : 30pm by
Acting President Cannon.
Trustees Present: BLEVINS, HARRISON, CANNON, BACIGALUPI
Trustees Absent: MINK
Staff Present: MRS. JUDY GLADYSZ, LIBRARY SECRETARY
MR. ALFRED ESCOFFIER, ASST. CITY LIBRARIAN
ACCEPTANCE OF RESIGNATION OF TRUSTEE HARRISON:
Trustee Harrison said he had been appointed to the Planning
Commission at the Council Meeting on Monday night. He said he enjoyed the
year on the Library Board, adding that the Library has a great staff and a
great Board. The Board members said they were sorry to see him go but
wished him good luck on his new Commission appointment. Trustee Harrison
left the Library Board meeting at 4 : 50pm.
BILLS:
M/S/C (Blevins/Harrison) unanimously to approve the payment of City
checks in the amount of $18 , 502 . 86 . M/S/C (Blevins/Harrison) unanimously
to approve the payment of the Trustees Special Fund in the amount of
$1 , 038 . 68 .
MINUTES:
Minutes of the Regular Meeting of July 21st, 1987 were approved.
CORRESPONDENCE AND COMMUNICATIONS:
Acknowledgements: a. Letter to Peninsula Foundation requesting a finan-
cial statement. Included in packets.
b. Letter to the Burlingame Lions Club, read by
acting Secretary Blevins, thanking them for their
on-going support.
c. Letter to Joe Harvey thanking him for attending
the 75th Anniversary Celebration and for being the
Master of Ceremonies.
d. Library Spectacles : Distributed
e. Friends Newsletter: Distributed
f. Letter from Temple Shalom commending Cathy
Somerton on her story telling programs.
g. Acting Secretary Blevins also read a letter from
Sue Lempert, President of the Board of Trustees of
the San Mateo Union High School District regarding
Reading Break.

REPORTS:
City Librarian: Duncan Property: It was agreed that the matter of the
request to the Peninsula Community Foundation be put on next month' s
Agenda if Mrs. Bergsing has not received a response to the letter written
by Trustee Blevins regarding a financial statement and requesting a tour
of the upstairs rental portion of the Duncan property.
Geac: Acting President Cannon said she enjoyed reading the Geac
information that had been included in the Board packets and that it had
answered her questions. The other Trustees agreed.
Trustee Bacigalupi said his tour and orientation of the Library was very
interesting. He said it gave him a clearer idea as to how the Library is
run. He stated that he was impressed with the "professionalism" of the
staff .
Library Statistics: Mrs. Bergsing pointed out the table showing that
Burlingame appropriates substantially more money per capita for library
materials than any of the other libraries in P.L.S. Some discussion
followed.
UNFINISHED BUSINESS:
Geac Upgrade: Discussed under Librarian' s Report.
NEW BUSINESS:
Strategic Planning Mrs. Bergsing said she and Al Escoffier and
Workshop: Trustee Cannon will be attending this workshop
in Millbrae on September 21st. Mrs. Bergsing
said she feels it' s important to engage in long
range planning in order to know and meet the
library needs of the community, and to plan .for
additional space requirements . Some discussion
followed.
Special Pre-School Program:M/S/C (Blevins/Bacigalupi) to open the Easton
Branch for a Special Pre-School Program on
Saturday morning from 11-noon ( 1 hour) on
Saturday mornings for thee programs over a
three month period. (one per month)
C.L.A. Conference: There was some discussion regarding attending the
California Library Association Conference to be held in Santa Clara in
November.
Programs and Services: Mrs. Bergsing announced that the silent art
auction would raise over $2,600 if everyone who bid on a picture comes and
picks it up and pays for it.
ADJOURNMENT•
The meeting of August 18th, 1987 was adjourned at 5 : 15pm with the
next meeting scheduled for September 15th in the California Room.
