HomeMy WebLinkAboutMin - LB - 1987.09.15 BURLINGAME PUBLIC LIBRARY BOARD OF TRUSTEES MINUTES SEPTEMBER 15TH, 1987 CALL TO ORDER: A duly noticed regular meeting of the Burlingame Public Library Board of Trustees was held on the above date in the California Room of the Burlingame Public Library. The meeting was called to order at 4 : 30pm by President Mink. Trustees Present: BLEVINS, MINK, CANNON, BACIGALUPI Trustees Absent: NONE Staff Present: MRS. JUDY GLADYSZ, LIBRARY SECRETARY MR. ALFRED ESCOFFIER, ASST. CITY LIBRARIAN BILLS• M/S/C (Cannon/Bacigalupi) unanimously to approve the payment of City checks in the amount of $27,139. 55. M/S/C (Cannon/Bacigalupi) unanimously to approve the payment of the Trustees Special Fund in the amount of $1 ,445 . 67 . MINUTES: Minutes of the Regular Meeting of August 18th, 1987 were approved. CORRESPONDENCE AND COMMUNICATIONS: Acknowledgements: a. Letter from Michael Gentleman requesting direct public access to the University of California on- line catalogs. Mrs . Bergsing explained what public access to an on-line data base means. She stated she will inform Mr. Gentleman that the Library can provide the service but not in a direct-access mode. Some discussion followed. b. Letter from Lee Marie VanDusen complimenting two staff members for help and courtesy. C. Letter from San Francisco Public Library to the Franchise Tax Board withdrawing from distribution of tax forms . Mrs. Bergsing read a tele-type she had received from the Peninsula Library System earlier in the day. There is a legislative bill, #AB129 on the Governor ' s desk that will require public libraries to distribute tax forms. Librarian Bergsing will follow-up on what happens to the bill. d. Library Spectacles: Distributed REPORTS: City Librarian: Vacancy on the Library Board: Mrs. Bergsing said the final filing date for the Library Board is September 16th and no interviews have been scheduled to date. Finance Director ' s Year End Financial Review: Mailed in the Board packets. Page 1 Friends of the Library Meeting: Librarian Bergsing said the Friends Fashion Show that was held in the Community Room on Sunday, September 13th, was a very nice affair. She said the clothes, from the 1912 Edwardian era, were just magnificent. UNFINISHED BUSINESS: Letter from Foundation Regarding the Duncan Trust: Mrs. Bergsing has heard nothing since receiving the letter from the Foundation. President Mink suggested Mrs. Bergsing get in touch with the Foundation to see if Ms . Guberman-Lane has responded to the letter from Mr. Somerville. Also, the Board suggested that Librarian Bergsing try and schedule an appointment to view the upstairs portion of the property in conjunction with the next Board meeting. Trustee Bacigalupi discussed the financial report from the Foundation on the Duncan Property and suggested that since there is such a large amount of money that the Library should draft a list of needed items and present it to the Foundation. Mrs. Bergsing explained the procedures for requesting funds that the Library Board has followed in the past. Trustee Blevins suggested waiting until after the first of the year or until budget requests were received from staff before requesting funds from the Foundation. Discussion followed and Librarian Bergsing said she would check with staff regarding any immediate needs they might have. ki There was some discussion regarding possible future uses of the Duncan property. There were no decisions made. Librarian Bergsing said she will continue to discuss the possibilities with staff. Trustee Registration and Attendance at C.L.A. Conference: Mrs. Bergsing distributed the Preliminary Conference Programs and asked the Trustees to fill out the appropriate paperwork before the deadline if they are going to be attending the Conference. Librarian Bergsing reminded the Trustees about Thursday' s celebration on the lawn at City Hall for the Bicentennial of the Constitution. Trustee Bacigalupi said the book on goal-setting for public libraries was very good and helped him, as a new trustee, to understand the process in library goal-setting. He found the book on performance measures less helpful. The books were passed-on to Trustee Blevins. I NEW BUSINESS: ADJOURNMENT• The meeting of September 15th, 1987 was adjourned at 5: 25pm with the next meeting scheduled for October 20th in the California Room. Respectfully submitted, Patricia M.
