City Librarian's Report
May 21, 1996
"Something New is Building..."
Major excavation work began on the Primrose site on Monday, April 29th. One
hundred and fifty trucks moved through the site that day removing approximately 5 feet
of soil. This was the first step in the excavation work which will continue throughout
the month. Shoring of the site, particularly at the south and east portions of the
property is currently underway. The shoring consists of drilling for, and installing steel
soldier piles along the perimeter of the site. Shoring has also been done against the
original 1930's structure to secure it. Further excavation to a depth of approximately
25 feet will continue in the coming weeks.
The de-watering of the site is being accomplished through the installation of
wells along the perimeter. The purpose of the wells is to eliminate water which will
likely collect due to the high water table. Engineers felt this was the safest way to
keep the excavated site free of water and allow construction to continue in a timely
manner. This phase of the project is on schedule.
Primrose Library Interiors
Last Wednesday we received the preliminary furniture plans. The initial set
includes existing furniture keyed into the plan. New furniture will be worked in after
the existing pieces have been confirmed. Finishes and other details are pending.
Several changes to the design have been suggested to the architects recently
by staff. Following extensive review of the shelving plans for the new building, we
have arrived at a plan which should allow us to maximize the logical arrangement of
materials in the building.
Public Relations Award
The Library has been awarded a "Certificate of Merit" from the American Library
Association, Public Relations Council for our monthly calendar of children's activities.
The winning entry was the November 1995 calendar. Copies of this calendar will be
included in a display by the Council at the upcoming American Library Association
conference in June in New York City. Thanks to the Friends of the Library for the
funds for the printing costs and to staff artist Nancy Montague who designed the
calendar.

Internet Use
The three month survey period for public use of the Internet has been
completed. The public Internet terminal was installed across from the Reference Desk
in the Temporary Quarters Library for the past 90 days. The public response has been
overwhelmingly positive. We have received many compliments from users and very
few questions.
As a result of the trial period, we will change the open access to a sign up
sheet with 1/2 hour increments to help control user time and allow more users access
to the workstation. We plan not to accept telephone sign-ups, nor to involve staff in
the sign up process.
Friends of the Library
The Friends of the Library made $ 1,600.00 on their most recent one day
Booksale at the Recreation Center. This will be the last sale that will utilize the
Recreation center, as the building is undergoing some upgrade work for ADA
compliance. The Friends are now searching for an alternative site for storage and
future sales. Sales may need to be suspended during the reconstruction project if a
site cannot be found.
The Friends Board met with the City Librarian on May 7th, and the happy result
is a gift of $14,000 to be used for a variety of projects. The Friends will be supporting
children's programs including the Holiday program and Poetry Month, along with the
Begin with Books program. The Friends have also agreed to fund one CD Rom
workstation for the Children's room now, and has pledged to fund three more
workstations for the new building. Thanks to the Friends for your generous support!
Children's Services
Joan Manini did 2 programs for the Recreation Department for their Babysitters
and Mother's Helpers classes.
Joan also met with the school librarians who are pulling together a joint
summer reading list for children. The list will be reviewed at the end of the summer.
The poetry anthology, which was the product of the winter poetry workshops,
has gone to the printer, and will be available shortly.
The children's staff is continuing to work on the summer reading programs. For
children who can read, the program will be Ravenous Readers Summer Reading
Club. For pre-school children, the club will be Readerousaurs. The sixth through
eighth graders will be invited to join the Book groupies Book Club.
Following an in-house recruitment, Jan Eustis has joined the children's staff as
a part-time library assistant at the public service desk. Jan began work at the library
as a volunteer, and was most recently in the Technical Services Division.
-2-
Begin with Books
During April, Cathy did 16 programs including 3 Preschool Story Times, 2
Toddler Story Times, 2 Main Library Story Times, 3 visits to Easton, 1 visit to Main, and
5 programs at schools. These programs were attended by 431 children.
Easton Branch
Circulation continues to rise at the Branch. The popular paperbacks, dubbed
"Quick Picks" are very popular. Lisa Dunseth offered programs to children at the
newly opened Goodwill Store, and to kindergartners from Lincoln School, and third
graders from Our Lady of Angels School.
Reference Services
On April 10, a number of reference staff attended a demonstration of the
Information Access online periodical index for Windows at the Information Access
offices in Foster City. This product is one of the candidates for county-wide installation
in the PLS libraries. The demonstration was followed by a tour of the facilities.
Dan Alvarez is assisting with the Burlingame Community Picnic.
