HomeMy WebLinkAboutMin - LB - 1988.06.21 BURLINGAME PUBLIC LIBRARY BOARD OF TRUSTEES MINUTES JUNE 21ST, 1988 CALL TO ORDER• A duly noticed regular meeting of the Burlingame Public Library Board of Trustees was held on the above date in the California Room of the Burlingame Public Library. The meeting was called to order at 4 : 30pm by Trustee Cannon. Trustees Present: CANNON, ROBERTSON, BLEVINS, BACIGALUPI Trustees Absent: MINK Staff Present: MRS. PATRICIA BERGSING, CITY LIBRARIAN MR. ALFRED ESCOFFIER, ASST. CITY LIBRARIAN MRS. JUDY GLADYSZ, LIBRARY SECRETARY MS. SHUK-CHUN AU-YEUNG, LIBRARIAN II MS. MARIBETH FARCICH - LIBRARIAN I MRS. KATHY NAFTALY - LIBRARY ASSISTANT II BILLS: M/S/C (Blevins/Bacigalupi) unanimously to approve the payment of City checks in the amount of $59 , 086 . 59 and payment of the Trustees Special Fund in the amount of $527 .75. Trustee Cannon welcomed the new staff members. MINUTES: Minutes of the Regular Meeting of May 17th, 1988 were approved as written and ordered filed. CORRESPONDENCE AND COMMUNICATIONS: Acknowledgements: a. Letter from San Mateo City Librarian Regarding Project Read - Mailed in packets b. Letter from President Mink to Council Regarding Project Read - Mailed in packets c. Council Minutes - June 8 , 1988 Meeting - Mailed in packets d. Priority of Service Statement from the Planning Team - Mailed in packets e. Letter to the Peninsula Community Foundation - Mailed in Packets f. CLA Clarion - Mailed in packets g. Flyer for Booth at San Mateo County Fair - Mailed in packets h. Library Spectacles - Mailed in packets INTRODUCTION OF STAFF MEMBERS: Mrs. Bergsing introduced the Board members to the new staff members and vice-versa. The staff members then told a little of their backgrounds . The Board members welcomed them and expressed pleasure that the Library was once again at full staff. Page 1 UNFINISHED BUSINESS: Budget Review - 1988-1989 : Mrs. Bergsing said the Library Budget for the fiscal year 1988-1989 had been approved, as submitted, by City Council at their regular meeting on June 20 , 1988 . The Board members noticed that there were no funds approved for Project Read. Mrs. Bergsing said she had notified Nancy Crabbe, San Mateo Public Library Director, and Ms . Crabbe agreed that San Mateo Public Library would continue to serve Burlingame residents for the 1988-89 budget year. REPORTS: Planning Committee - Trustee Cannon: Trustee Cannon gave the Board an update on the Long-Range Planning Process, stating there was a meeting on May 19th. Trustee Blevins congratulated the Committee on the good job they have done in so little time. Librarian Bergsing said a full report will be forwarded to the Board in the fall. Meeting with Dr. McCune - Trustees Cannon and Robertson: Trustees Robertson and Cannon gave a brief synopisis of the meeting they had attended with Dr. McCune who spoke on changing demographics, societal changes, and the need for planning. City Librarian: Trustee Blevins said the volunteer coffee was very nice. Trustee Cannon asked Mrs . Bergsing if there had been any feedback on the answering machine located at the Reference Desk. Mrs . Bergsing said she had only heard of two people who were not happy with it, all of the other feedback had been positive. Trustee Robertson asked what happens to the books that are "de- selected" from the Library' s collection. Mrs. Bergsing said they are placed in the Friends Book Sale which netted $3 , 100 in May. Trustee Bacigalupi said he advertised the Friends Booksale on the radio as a public service message. ADJOURNMENT: The meeting of June 21st, 1988 was adjourned at 5 : 15pm with the next meeting scheduled for July 19th in the California Room. Respectfully submitted, Patricia M.
