HomeMy WebLinkAboutAgenda Packet - LB - 1988.09.20 BURLINGAME PUBLIC LIBRARY BOARD OF TRUSTEES MINUTES AUGUST 17TH, 1988 CALL TO ORDER: A duly noticed regular meeting of the Burlingame Public Library Board of Trustees was held on the above date in the California Room of the Burlingame Public Library. The meeting was called to order at 4 : 30pm by President Cannon. Trustees Present: CANNON, ROBERTSON, BLEVINS, MINK Trustees Absent: BACIGALUPI Staff Present: MRS. PATRICIA BERGSING, CITY LIBRARIAN MRS. JUDY GLADYSZ, LIBRARY SECRETARY BILLS: M/S/C (Blevins/Mink) unanimously to approve the payment of City checks in the amount of $28 ,754 . 95 and payment of the Trustees Special Fund in the amount of $1, 092 .70. MINUTES: Minutes of the Regular Meeting of July 19th, 1988 were approved as written and ordered filed. CORRESPONDENCE AND COMMUNICATIONS: a. Spectacies - Mailed in packets b. California Library Association Conference Preliminary Programs: Distributed at the Meeting UNFINISHED BUSINESS: REPORTS: City Librarian: Reference Division: Mrs. Bergsing said she had received some letters from the Japanese exchange students who had toured the Library thanking her for the informative tour. Children' s Services: Librarian Bergsing reminded the Board members that the Summer Reading Club party will be held on Monday at 2 : 00 featuring the "Magical Moonshine Theatre. " All are invited to attend. Trustee Robertson said there are a good number of children participating the Summer Reading Club. NEW BUSINESS: ADJOURNMENT: The meeting of August 16th, 1988 was adjourned at 4 : 55pm with the next meeting scheduled for September 20th in the California Room. Respectfully submitted, Patricia M. Bergsing Clerk of the Board PMB/jg 081788 Page 1 LIBRARIAN' S REPORT September 1938 Planning Process During the month of August, I wrote and rewrote two drafts of the long- range plan 1988-1993 . The latest version has been distributed to the Planning Committee for final editing and comments, and it is our hope that we can have the plan ready for discussion and endorsement at your October meeting. Friends of the Library The Friends of the Library are sponsoring a docent lecture on the Andrew Wyeth exhibition of The Helga Pictures on September 28th, at 7 : 30 in the Community Room. The Friends Fall Book-Sale will be held on October 7th, 8th and 9th. Holiday Schedule 1989 Included in this packet is the proposed 1989 holiday schedule for the Library as well as the holiday schedule for City Hall. Its on your agenda for approval at the meeting. Library Bond Act There will be a fund raiser, sponsored by the Peninsula Library System, to raise funds for Proposition 85 , the Library Construction and Renovation Bond Act on the November ballot. I ' ll have more information for your meeting. New Redwood City Library - The Redwood City Library held its formal dedication on Sunday, September 11th. A number of the Library staff attended. They did a very nice job incorporating the old fire station with the new building. Would you be interested in trying to plan a time when we might tour the facility? Programs and Services Two hundred and twenty two children finished the Summer Reading club. The Magical Moonshine Theatre entertainment at the Reading Club Party was a big hit! Burlingame Lions President Bruce Kirkbride, and Library Board member Kris Cannon welcomed the children. Pam Wade provided the entertainment for the Read Aloud Program. Esther Cummings coordinated eight members of the staff in the Peninsula Library System booth at the San Mateo County Fair. Poets Joyce Jenkins and David Highsmith were the featured guest poets and they read to audiences of 20-25 during August. Esther Cummings attended the Burlingame Beautification Commission meeting on August 4th to discuss a joint venture for the Spring Garden Seminar. The Garden seminar is sponsored by the Park Department and the Beautification Commission. The Friends will be participating this year by providing the funds to hire a speaker. Page 1 Geac Discussion is continuing of various facets of the conversion to the Geac 9000. Locally, weeding of little-used items from the general ,— zollection has continued in the fiction, non-fiction and reference collections. Reference Division Reference statistics were up 12% over the same month last year. Two new Canon microfilm reader/printers were purchased for the division. Dorothy Ezquerro, Library Assistant III , will begin working as back-up on the Reference desk shortly. Dorothy is taking advantage of a job enrichment opportunity, by working her public desk hours in reference instead of circulation. Most of the reference librarians will receive training on Datatimes, an online database which indexes newspapers. PLS will fund a Datatimes account for librarians throughout the County to use. Collection Management Collection analysis data is now available for all four quarters of the last fiscal year. The results were: Fiction = 29% Non-Fiction = 47% Children' s = 24% Exhibits and Displays August exhibits featured paintings by Pat Wipf, Fred Livingston and Rose Leigh. Also featured were exhibits on damaged books, search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence and the Opera Season. Easton Branch New software has been purchased for the Apple computer at the Branch. A revised list will come out shortly. Diane reports 38 children ( 25 parents) attended the Bedtime Storyhours, and 61 children attended the Preschool storyhour. Several parents expressed an interest in a year round Bedtime storyhour. Personnel Several new pages have been hired from our recent page list. We will shortly be interviewing for part-time library assistants (on-call) for the Circulation Desk.
