Planning Process
During the month of August, I wrote and rewrote two drafts of the long-
range plan 1988-1993 . The latest version has been distributed to the
Planning Committee for final editing and comments, and it is our hope that
we can have the plan ready for discussion and endorsement at your October
meeting.
Friends of the Library
The Friends of the Library are sponsoring a docent lecture on the
Andrew Wyeth exhibition of The Helga Pictures on September 28th, at 7 : 30 in
the Community Room.
The Friends Fall Book-Sale will be held on October 7th, 8th and 9th.
Holiday Schedule 1989
Included in this packet is the proposed 1989 holiday schedule for the
Library as well as the holiday schedule for City Hall. Its on your agenda
for approval at the meeting.
Library Bond Act
There will be a fund raiser, sponsored by the Peninsula Library System,
to raise funds for Proposition 85 , the Library Construction and Renovation
Bond Act on the November ballot. I ' ll have more information for your
meeting.
New Redwood City Library
- The Redwood City Library held its formal dedication on Sunday,
September 11th. A number of the Library staff attended. They did a very
nice job incorporating the old fire station with the new building. Would
you be interested in trying to plan a time when we might tour the facility?
Programs and Services
Two hundred and twenty two children finished the Summer Reading club.
The Magical Moonshine Theatre entertainment at the Reading Club Party was a
big hit! Burlingame Lions President Bruce Kirkbride, and Library Board
member Kris Cannon welcomed the children. Pam Wade provided the
entertainment for the Read Aloud Program.
Esther Cummings coordinated eight members of the staff in the Peninsula
Library System booth at the San Mateo County Fair.
Poets Joyce Jenkins and David Highsmith were the featured guest poets
and they read to audiences of 20-25 during August.
Esther Cummings attended the Burlingame Beautification Commission
meeting on August 4th to discuss a joint venture for the Spring Garden
Seminar. The Garden seminar is sponsored by the Park Department and the
Beautification Commission. The Friends will be participating this year by
providing the funds to hire a speaker.

Geac
Discussion is continuing of various facets of the conversion to the
Geac 9000. Locally, weeding of little-used items from the general
,— zollection has continued in the fiction, non-fiction and reference
collections.
Reference Division
Reference statistics were up 12% over the same month last year.
Two new Canon microfilm reader/printers were purchased for the
division.
Dorothy Ezquerro, Library Assistant III , will begin working as back-up
on the Reference desk shortly. Dorothy is taking advantage of a job
enrichment opportunity, by working her public desk hours in reference
instead of circulation.
Most of the reference librarians will receive training on Datatimes, an
online database which indexes newspapers. PLS will fund a Datatimes account
for librarians throughout the County to use.
Collection Management
Collection analysis data is now available for all four quarters of the
last fiscal year. The results were:
Fiction = 29%
Non-Fiction = 47%
Children' s = 24%
Exhibits and Displays
August exhibits featured paintings by Pat Wipf, Fred Livingston and
Rose Leigh. Also featured were exhibits on damaged books, search for Extra
Terrestrial Intelligence and the Opera Season.
Easton Branch
New software has been purchased for the Apple computer at the Branch. A
revised list will come out shortly. Diane reports 38 children ( 25 parents)
attended the Bedtime Storyhours, and 61 children attended the Preschool
storyhour. Several parents expressed an interest in a year round Bedtime
storyhour.

Several new pages have been hired from our recent page list. We will
shortly be interviewing for part-time library assistants (on-call) for the
